Raising a sensory seeker — learning, loving❤️

I used to wonder why my little boy was always crashing, chewing, jumping, spinning, or making loud noises when other kids weren’t.

Then we got the diagnosis: Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) — and suddenly, it all made sense. 💛

He’s a sensory seeker, not misbehaving. And I’m learning how to support him every step of the way.

If you’re also navigating life with a sensory seeker, you’re not alone. I’d love to connect with other moms on this journey. Let’s share ideas, tips, struggles, and wins — because we got it. 💬💕

🧩 Save this post for later or share it with a mama who might need it.

... Read moreSensory Processing Disorder (SPD) is a neurological condition where the brain has difficulty receiving and responding appropriately to sensory information. Children who are sensory seekers often crave intense sensory experiences, which explains behaviors such as crashing into objects, chewing on non-food items, constant movement, spinning, or making loud noises. These behaviors are not signs of misbehavior but rather natural attempts by children to self-regulate their sensory needs. Understanding SPD is crucial for parents and caregivers to provide the appropriate support. Some common signs include always moving or jumping, touching everything, seeking tight hugs, loud vocalizations, or climbing excessively. Recognizing these signals allows parents to create safe, structured environments where sensory seekers can thrive. Support strategies include sensory diets designed by occupational therapists, which may incorporate swings, weighted blankets, chewy toys, or scheduled physical activity to meet a child's sensory cravings safely. Gentle parenting approaches and positive reinforcement are essential, as shaming or punishing sensory-seeking behavior can exacerbate stress and misunderstandings. Connecting with support groups such as #SPDawareness and #Lemon8MomsClub helps parents share tips, experiences, and emotional support. Raising a sensory seeker requires patience, love, and ongoing learning, but with the right knowledge, parents can help their children navigate SPD successfully and foster their emotional and developmental growth. This comprehensive understanding of sensory seekers promotes empathy and effective parenting techniques that focus on nurturing neurodivergent children, emphasizing the importance of community, awareness, and tailored interventions.
