Arepita Dulce a Venezuela Sweet Treat
My ex husband is from Venezuela and he introduced me to this delicious treat that I craved during my entire pregnancy. For first time I'm making it for our son to try and see if he likes it the same way I like it.
Recipe:
* 1 cup P.A.N. pre-cooked cornmeal
* ¾–1 cup warm water
* ¼ cup brown sugar or 3 tablespoons white sugar
* ½ teaspoon salt
* ½ teaspoon cinnamon
* ½ teaspoon vanilla
* 1 tablespoon butter, melted
* Optional: 1 tablespoon anise seeds
* Oil for frying
To make them: Dissolve the sugar and salt in ¾ cup warm water, then add the vanilla and melted butter. Stir in the P.A.N. and cinnamon (and anise if using).
Let it rest for 5 minutes. The dough should be soft and easy to shape. If it’s dry or cracking, add warm water 1 tablespoon at a time.
Make small balls and flatten them fairly thin—about ¼ inch thick.
Fry over medium to medium-low heat until they’re deep golden and crispy on both sides, roughly 2–3 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels.
