In my own spiritual journey, I've found the tension between being visible in faith and avoiding the trap of performance very real. Jesus’ teaching warns against turning acts of faith like giving, praying, and fasting into public displays that seek human approval. Instead, He encourages a righteousness that is sincere and hidden—done for God’s eyes alone. This teaching resonates with many who feel pressure to show off spirituality on social media or in public settings. For instance, sharing acts of kindness might feel rewarding when we gain likes or praise, but Jesus calls us to a deeper authenticity, where the motivation is pure and the reward is divine, not human applause. I’ve noticed that when faith becomes a performance, it can create a false self—like wearing a mask in a theater. The 'Hypokrites' in Greek referred to actors who hid behind masks to play roles. This metaphor helps me reflect on moments when I might have acted spiritual only to impress others, rather than truly embodying my beliefs. Embracing the principle of ‘do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing’ revolutionized how I approach generosity and service. Keeping these acts private shifts the focus from self-glorification to genuine care. It’s liberating to live faith Coram Deo (“before the face of God”) where my actions align with who I am both in public and private. This perspective challenges the modern cultural urge to perform and gain validation. Instead, it invites us to let our inner light illuminate the world subtly, so the glory goes to God—not ourselves. Authentic spirituality transcends the staged drama of performance; it flows naturally from a transformed heart and is free from anxiety about human judgment. Finding freedom in this truth is life-changing. The paradox of light and mask resolves when we realize that the goal isn't to be seen but to let God’s love shine through us. When our heart truly seeks God’s approval above all, our faith no longer feels like a performance but a heartfelt relationship, lived openly and honestly in every moment.
