Anyone else afraid of chickens 🐓

Florida

... Read moreOkay, so I have to share this because I'm still laughing (and a little bewildered!). My sweet, adventurous puppy, who usually isn't scared of anything, recently had his first encounter with our backyard flock. I was so excited, thinking he'd be curious or playful. Oh, how wrong I was! The moment he saw 'the thugs in my yard' – yes, that's what I've started calling our chickens now – his whole demeanor changed. He went from brave explorer to trembling little furball in seconds. He ain't so sure anymore about this farm life! It was clear as day: chickens were too scary for him. He even tried to hide behind a 'TREE' at one point, just to get away from them. Honestly, it was both heartbreaking and absolutely hilarious to watch. He's definitely a mama's boy when those chickens are around! This whole experience got me thinking, is this a canine 'fear of chickens' thing? Or is it just my unique little guy? I’ve heard of people who have a genuine phobia of chickens, known as alektorophobia. It sounds funny, but for some, it's a very real and intense fear that can cause significant distress. It makes you wonder, what is the phobia of chickens rooted in, both for humans and animals? For my puppy, it seems to be a mix of surprise, their sudden, jerky movements, and maybe those sharp beaks looking a bit too close for comfort. They peck around so confidently, and I guess to a small puppy, that can look quite intimidating, almost aggressive. Their loud clucking and sudden wing flaps probably don't help either! I've been trying to figure out how to help him get used to them, but so far, slow introductions haven't really worked. He just freezes, or tries to make a run for it, looking genuinely terrified. It's not aggression on his part, just pure, unadulterated fear. I wonder what it is about them that triggers such a strong reaction. Maybe it's the unknown, or perhaps some primal instinct. For now, I'm just letting him observe from a safe distance, rewarding him with treats and praise for calm behavior. No pressure to become best friends with the feathered residents. I'm focusing on making him feel safe and secure, even if that means keeping a respectful distance between him and 'the thugs.' Has anyone else experienced this with their pets? Or even, dare I ask, personally? It's fascinating how certain creatures can evoke such strong reactions. Maybe it's just one of those quirks we have to accept and even cherish about our furry friends. Until my puppy overcomes his fear, I'll keep protecting my little 'mama's boy' from 'the thugs.' Share your funny pet phobia stories! I'd love to know I'm not alone in this chicken-induced chaos!

Chickens are so fun to be around. They eat all your leftover food scraps so they are relatively cheap to keep after initial costs, and they provide you with food every day! We keep an average of 15-20 hens at any given time and I’m also known to love a rooster or two🐔 Id recommend them for anyo

1. They grow fast! Those tiny balls of fluff at the store look that way for about a week before they start growing feathers then they have this awkward teenage stage where they look ridiculous 😅 2. Poop! The more chickens; the more poop! And you have to clean that coop! Wear gloves! 💩 3. Sickness
