how to prevent burnout this semester 😓🫶

Even though it can feel very isolating at the moment, burnout is very common to happen to a lot of college students, especially as the semester progresses. It has happened to me a couple of times and it’s always an awful time to go through, so I thought that could share some tips that I used to help avoid coming to that point of stress and exhaustion :)

👉Break down large tasks:

Large tasks that keep getting larger the longer you leave them can put a lot of strain on you. What I like to do to avoid this for course-long assignments is to see what they are at the start of a semester and dedicate each month to completing a separate part. Here are some other ideas for breaking down larger tasks:

course paper | one paragraph every week

laundry | one load at a time to avoid buildup

clean room | One corner every day

homework | one subject a day

👉Stay healthy:

Sleep: I know it’s hard, but try to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night. Being physically exhausted very quickly can lead to burnout. Being tired will also make you less productive during the day, leading to more work building up, so it is just a good idea overall to get in a good amount of sleep.

👉Workout: Maintain a stable workout routine, even if it is just 10 minutes a day. If you don’t have time in the day to go to the gym or go for a run, I would say to follow a YouTube workout so that you have something that keeps you active.

👉Manage your time:

Plan out what you’re doing the day before, so you don’t waste time picking what to do. I feel like this is where a lot of my dedicated study time goes to waste, and so that is why I either have one subject for the entire day or I have a set of assignments that I know I have to complete.

Try to minimize “in-between” periods, and time spent between classes or activities. Instead, try and fill them with something productive, like assigned readings or discussion post forms.

👉Relax:

Living with anxiety worsens any situation, so try and take a step back to reduce anxiety. Go outside, eat your favorite food, catch up with a friend, and remember that life is short so avoid obsessing over it :)

... Read moreBurnout among college students is a widespread issue that can severely impact academic performance and overall well-being. Recognizing early signs of burnout such as chronic fatigue, irritability, and difficulty concentrating is crucial for timely intervention. In addition to breaking down large tasks into manageable parts as outlined, students are encouraged to set realistic goals and prioritize tasks to maintain motivation throughout the semester. Healthy habits play a significant role in preventing burnout. Consistently getting 7-8 hours of sleep restores cognitive function and reduces physical exhaustion that contributes to stress. Incorporating even brief daily workouts, like a 10-minute YouTube routine, helps increase energy levels and improve mood by releasing endorphins. Effective time management extends beyond daily planning; it involves optimizing "in-between" periods, such as gaps between classes, by engaging in productive activities like assigned readings or discussion posts. This approach minimizes wasted time and reduces last-minute pressures. Relaxation and anxiety reduction techniques are equally important. Engaging in social interactions, enjoying favorite foods, or simply spending time outdoors can alleviate stress and promote emotional resilience. For students grappling with high anxiety, mindfulness practices or seeking support from campus counseling services can provide additional relief. Extra strategies such as glamorizing study sessions—by creating an inviting study environment or rewarding progress—can increase motivation. Additionally, students should be aware that it is never too late to drop or defer a challenging course if it prevents permanent burnout. In summary, preventing college burnout requires a holistic approach that combines task management, physical health, strategic use of time, and stress-relief techniques. Implementing these methods can help students navigate the semester with less stress and better academic outcomes.
