What no one tell you about marriage

Something I wish someone told me before I got married is that love doesn’t cancel out loneliness.

There are seasons where life gets heavy, routines take over, and connection takes more intention than people admit, especially from job demands or having kids.

It’s normal.

It doesn’t mean something is wrong.

It just means relationships ebb and flow — and that’s okay.

What’s something about marriage no one prepared you for?

... Read moreWhen I first got married, I had this picture-perfect idea of constant closeness, like we'd always be on the same wavelength, holding hands and finishing each other's sentences. But boy, was I in for a reality check! The truth is, marriage isn't constant closeness. There are absolutely times when you find yourselves together, but not connecting, and it can feel incredibly isolating, even when you're deeply in love. I remember feeling this pang of guilt, thinking, 'What's wrong with us?' But over time, I've learned that it's a completely normal part of the journey. Life throws so much at us – demanding jobs, raising kids, juggling household responsibilities, even just the sheer exhaustion that comes with adulting. These things can slowly, almost imperceptibly, create a little distance. You're living alongside each other, performing your roles, but that deep, intimate connection can sometimes take a backseat. It's like you're in the same boat, but rowing in different directions, or sometimes, just drifting. What really helped me was realizing that relationships naturally ebb and flow. Just like seasons change, so does the dynamic within your marriage. There will be periods of intense connection and passion, and then there will be seasons where life gets heavy, and routines take over. The key isn't to panic when you hit those quieter times, but to understand that it's an opportunity to learn how to find your way back to each other, especially during difficult times. For me, finding our way back often starts with intentionality. It's so easy to let life happen to you, but making time for each other, even small moments, can make a huge difference. This could be anything from a dedicated 'no-phone' dinner every night, to scheduling a regular date night, or even just a daily check-in where you truly listen to each other's day, beyond the surface-level stuff. We started actively setting aside time for just us, whether it's a walk in the park or watching a movie together – not just in the same room, but truly *together*. Another thing I've learned is the importance of communication, not just about logistics, but about how you're feeling. Sometimes, being together but not connecting stems from unspoken needs or assumptions. Opening up about those feelings of distance, vulnerability, and even loneliness, can be scary but incredibly powerful. It allows your partner to understand what's happening in your world and gives them a chance to meet you there. It’s a continuous dance of reconnecting. It might mean picking up a shared hobby again, trying something new together, or simply reminding each other of the things you appreciate. It taught me that marriage isn't about constant closeness, but about the resilience to keep building bridges back to each other, no matter how many times you feel a little lost. It's about grace, patience, and a whole lot of love that adapts and grows through every season.

This is so real. Marriage definitely has its seasons and requires so much intention, especially with kids.
