Hey everyone! I've been getting so many questions about how I create my Splatoon-inspired idol OCs, and I wanted to share my personal process with you all. It’s such a fun challenge to blend the vibrant world of Splatoon with the glam of K-pop or J-pop idols! First off, inspiration is key. I always start by looking at official Splatoon idols like the Squid Sisters and Off the Hook. What makes them iconic? Their unique blend of Inkling/Octoling features, catchy music, and incredibly stylish outfits! Then, I think about what kind of 'idol' vibe I want for my OC group. Do they have a fierce, edgy concept or a bubbly, cheerful one? This helps set the stage for their overall look. Next, I dive into character design. For the Splatoon element, I focus on those signature Inkling or Octoling features: expressive eyes, unique tentacle hairstyles, and vibrant skin tones. I love experimenting with different tentacle styles – long and flowing, short and spiky, or even braided! Each character needs to feel distinct. Think about their 'species' too – Inkling or Octoling? This can influence their base color palette and general silhouette. Outfit design is where the 'idol' really comes to life. Splatoon fashion is all about streetwear, bold colors, and futuristic touches. I try to incorporate that while also giving them idol-worthy stage outfits. Glitter, metallic accents, and asymmetrical cuts are my go-to's. Remember how the image described 'unique hairstyles and outfits'? That's exactly what I aim for! I often sketch out a few different costume ideas before settling on one that truly captures their stage persona. Are they wearing matching outfits with slight variations, or completely individual styles that still feel cohesive as a group? Beyond visuals, I also think about their personalities and roles within the group. Who's the leader? The main vocalist? The quirky dancer? Giving them distinct personalities helps bring them to life beyond just their appearance. The image also mentioned 'dynamic stances, showcasing their individual styles as singers or stars' – this is something I keep in mind as I imagine them performing. How would each OC pose on stage? What kind of energy do they exude? Finally, don't be afraid to play with color! Splatoon is known for its bright, contrasting colors, and idols often have very specific color schemes. I pick a main color for each OC and then build a palette around it, ensuring it pops against the glittery, vibrant backgrounds I imagine them performing against.
