Your brain is always rehearsing something.

The question is: what are you rehearsing?

Every time a symptom shows up and the automatic response is:

“What if this gets worse?”

“What if something is wrong?”

“What if I can’t handle this?”

…your brain gets another repetition of symptoms = threat.

Mental rehearsal gives you a chance to practice something different.

“This can feel uncomfortable and still be safe.”

“I know this feeling.”

“I can let this move through me.”

“My body does not need an emergency response right now.”

When you do this you’re giving your brain a new pattern to practice because the thoughts you repeat, the meanings you attach, and the responses you rehearse all become part of what your nervous system learns to expect.

Healing starts with rehearsing safety before your body fully knows how to feel it. ✨

Save this one and come back to it the next time your symptoms try to convince you that discomfort automatically means danger. ⚠️

... Read moreFrom my own experience, the process of mental rehearsal has been transformative in managing anxiety and chronic symptoms. Initially, I found myself trapped in a loop of negative thoughts like "What if this gets worse?" and "I can't handle this," which only amplified my discomfort. But by intentionally practicing a different inner dialogue, such as "This can feel uncomfortable and still be safe," I gradually rewired my brain's automatic responses. One effective technique I use is to literally borrow the comforting voice inside my mind, as if I were coaching a friend through their struggles. Saying aloud or silently, "Discomfort does not equal danger," helps to break the cycle of fearful anticipation that often fuels symptoms. It’s important to be patient and consistent with this practice, as the nervous system needs repeated exposures to new, safer patterns before they become the default. I also noticed that tuning in to my body’s signals without immediately interpreting them as threats was crucial. For example, when feeling a sudden tightness or racing heart, I remind myself that these sensations are uncomfortable but not dangerous. This approach reduces the “emergency response” my body tends to launch, resulting in fewer amplified symptoms and less anxiety overall. Over time, mental rehearsal didn’t just lessen my symptoms but empowered me to respond with greater calm and confidence. I encourage anyone dealing with chronic anxiety or health symptoms to become intentional about which inner voice they practice regularly. By shaping that voice towards acceptance and safety, healing truly begins before physical relief is fully felt.
