Loc Diaries: Issues with hydration
Dear Scalp: I’m entering my third year of my loc journey, I started out with a couple of baby locs to now being able to put my hair in a back ponytail 🥹. I love my hair and I want to do right by my head. Sometimes I lose track of time during the week so it leads to incomplete hair routines...
Signed, Dry and frizzy.
One thing that’s super important is keeping your locs moisturized, my favorite way to do so is with rosemary water and the best part is that you can make it yourself!
I would love to hear any hydration tips that you live by-!
Hey fellow loc journeyers! You know how important hydration is, right? For a long time, I struggled with keeping my locs moisturized, leading to that dreaded dry and frizzy look. But discovering rosemary water has been a total game-changer for me. Not only does it leave my locs feeling soft and supple, but I've also noticed a real difference in my scalp health and even some new growth! It's truly an all-natural hair mist that I swear by. Making your own rosemary water is incredibly simple, and honestly, it feels so good knowing exactly what's going into your hair. Here's my go-to method: First, I start by gathering a good handful of fresh rosemary sprigs. You want them vibrant and green! Next, I place these beautiful sprigs into a clean pink pot. Then, I pour about 2-3 cups of filtered water over them. The key is to make sure the rosemary is fully submerged. I then bring the water to a boil on the stove, letting it gently simmer for about 25 minutes. This slow boil really helps extract all those amazing nutrients from the rosemary. After boiling, I turn off the heat, cover the pink pot with a lid, and let the mixture steep for several hours, sometimes even overnight, until it's completely cooled. This steeping process is crucial for maximum potency. Once cooled, I strain the liquid to remove the sprigs, and pour my homemade rosemary goodness into a clean pink spray bottle. It's ready to use as a refreshing, all-natural hair mist! So, how do I incorporate this magic mist into my routine? I typically mist my locs 2-3 times a week, focusing on my scalp and the entire length of my locs. I make sure not to oversaturate them, just a light, even spray. After misting, I usually follow up with a light oil to seal in the moisture. What I've personally experienced is a significant reduction in dryness and itchiness on my scalp. My locs feel softer to the touch, look healthier, and have a beautiful natural shine. Plus, the fresh, herbal scent is so invigorating! While rosemary water is fantastic, true loc hydration is a holistic approach. I've learned that drinking plenty of water throughout the day is just as important for hair health as it is for my body. Also, don't forget deep conditioning! Once a month, I try to do a deep conditioning treatment to really infuse moisture into my locs. Another tip: protective styling! Keeping my locs in styles that minimize manipulation helps retain moisture and prevent breakage. And when it comes to washing, using sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners is a must. These harsh chemicals can strip your locs of their natural oils, leading to dryness. For best results, store your homemade rosemary water in the refrigerator. It usually stays fresh for about 1-2 weeks. If you notice any weird smells or discoloration, it's time to make a fresh batch! Consistency is key with anything related to hair care. Don't expect overnight miracles, but with regular use, you'll definitely start seeing and feeling the difference. Experiment with how often your locs need it – everyone's hair is unique. Listen to your locs; they'll tell you what they need! I’d love to hear your favorite hydration tips too – let's keep our locs flourishing together!

I do this with fresh rosemary and fresh mint, then add aloe Vera juice once it’s completely cooled down, my scalp and locs love it!!!
