Struggling Financially and Feeling Embarrassed?

I’ve been unemployed since January. Not because I wanted to be — I was pushed out of a job that should’ve protected me. And ever since then, I’ve been rebuilding my life one month at a time.

And honestly?

Some parts of it are embarrassing.

Not because I’m ashamed of myself, but because of how people react.

Like…

🍋When someone asks “Did you find a job yet?” and you want to scream

🍋 Going from paying bills with ease to choosing which ones get paid first

🍋 Watching your credit score drop

🍋 Applying for food stamps for the first time

🍋 Knowing you once had a 401k, and now you’re counting every dollar

🍋 Stressing over rent while pretending everything’s fine during the holidays

It’s weird being in this place where you know you’re doing everything you can… applying, creating, learning, surviving… and still feeling embarrassed because life didn’t go the way people think it “should.”

😅 So I’m asking because I can’t be the only one:

Do you ever get embarrassed about where you’re at right now… even though you’re doing your absolute best?

... Read moreIt's completely understandable if you've ever felt the urge to send an 'emoji asking for money' – maybe as a joke, or perhaps as a raw, honest expression of how you're truly feeling when money is tight. That feeling of financial vulnerability, the one that makes you want to hide, is a heavy burden. The truth is, rebuilding isn't cute; it's often messy and filled with moments of intense embarrassment. I remember those days vividly. The constant anxiety about upcoming bills, the dread of checking my bank balance, and the sheer shame of realizing I might have to tell someone I couldn't afford something. It’s hard to admit you're behind on rent, or that you're starting over at 40 (or any age!) when you thought you had everything figured out. Society often paints a picture of constant upward mobility, and when your reality doesn't match that, it can feel like a personal failure. This pressure, both internal and external, can be isolating. But here's what I've learned: your worth isn't tied to your bank account or your credit score. When you're in a tough spot, it's crucial to separate your situation from your self-worth. One practical step I found immensely helpful was to create a bare-bones budget. List every single expense, no matter how small, and then prioritize. It’s not about deprivation, but about gaining control, even if it’s just over a few dollars. Look for free financial counseling services; many non-profits offer them and can help you navigate difficult conversations with creditors or landlords, potentially even finding solutions you didn't know existed. Don't underestimate the power of a well-researched call to a biller; sometimes, payment plans or temporary relief options are available. Another huge part of this journey is managing the external pressure. When friends or family ask, 'Did you find a job yet?' or 'How are things going financially?' it can feel like an interrogation. I learned to have a few stock phrases ready. Something like, 'I'm actively working on it, and I appreciate your concern,' or 'Things are challenging right now, but I'm focusing on rebuilding,' can help you deflect without having to explain yourself in detail if you don't want to. Remember, you don't owe anyone a full financial disclosure. Setting boundaries around these conversations can protect your peace of mind while you're navigating a tough period. And for those moments when you truly need help, whether it's applying for assistance like food stamps, or asking a trusted loved one for support, try to frame it as a temporary strategy for stability, not a sign of defeat. It takes immense strength to acknowledge you need help and even more courage to seek it. You're not alone in this. Many people have faced similar struggles, and there's a whole community out there ready to listen and share their own wisdom. Focus on one step at a time, celebrating small victories, and know that every effort you make towards rebuilding counts, no matter how small or how un-glamorous it might seem. Connecting with others who understand, even online, can provide invaluable emotional support and practical advice.

For many women, the struggle isn’t a lack of discipline or effort — it’s a lack of education around income, systems, and long-term planning. When you’re only taught to budget and “be careful,” financial growth can feel confusing and heavy. This is about awareness, not blame. Save this if i
