Retinol for Beginners!

I wish someone explained retinol this simply when I first started 😭

Retinol can be amazing for helping with acne, texture, dark spots, and even fine lines, but the biggest mistake I see is people starting too strong and damaging their skin barrier.

If you're new to retinol, start with just 1-2 nights a week and use a pea-sized amount on completely dry skin. Follow with a moisturizer and don't forget SPF the next morning.

The goal isn't to use the strongest retinol possible. The goal is consistency. Slow and steady will always give you better results than trying to rush the process.

Save this post for when you're ready to start retinol and send it to a friend who's thinking about adding it to their routine 🤍

... Read moreStarting retinol can be an intimidating step in your skincare routine, but it’s important to approach it with patience and care. From my own experience, the key to success with retinol lies in consistency and protecting your skin barrier. When I first tried retinol, I made the common mistake of using it too often and applying too much product, which caused dryness and irritation. To avoid this, I recommend beginning with a small, pea-sized amount applied only on dry skin—this reduces the chance of irritation. Using retinol just 1-2 nights per week at the start allows your skin time to adjust gradually. On nights when I used retinol, I always followed it with a rich moisturizer to lock in hydration and soothe my skin. This step helped prevent peeling and redness that many beginners experience. Equally important is sunscreen the following day. Retinol increases photosensitivity, so applying SPF 30 or higher every morning is essential to protect your skin from UV damage and prevent dark spots from worsening. Also, avoid combining retinol with strong exfoliants or benzoyl peroxide in the same routine, since this can exacerbate irritation. I found that spacing out these products on different days worked best. Remember, retinol’s goal isn’t to deliver instant results but to improve skin texture, reduce acne, and fade fine lines over time. Slow and steady wins the race here. Don’t rush to stronger concentrations until your skin is fully accustomed. Starting slow helped me build a sustainable retinol routine that transformed my complexion without compromise.
