Hey everyone! So many of you have asked about my digital art process, especially what I use in Ibis Paint, and I’m super excited to share some of my go-to techniques and brushes. When I first started with digital art, it felt a bit overwhelming with all the options, but finding the right tools and understanding their purpose completely transformed my workflow. Ibis Paint has become my absolute favorite for its versatility and user-friendly interface. Let's kick things off with the basics. Setting up your canvas and understanding layers is foundational. I always start with a base layer, usually for my initial sketch. Then, I create new layers for line art, colors, shading, and highlights. This keeps everything organized, allowing me to easily make changes without affecting other parts of the drawing. I remember getting so frustrated early on when I tried to do everything on one layer – what a nightmare! Layer management is key, and I often use Layer 1, Layer 2, and Layer 3 for different stages of my artwork. One tool I absolutely cannot live without is the Lasso Fill. It’s a game-changer for speed and precision when blocking in colors. Instead of meticulously painting within lines, I can quickly select an area with the lasso tool and then hit the fill button. It saves so much time! I typically use it for base colors and then refine the edges later. Another setting that makes a huge difference in achieving smooth, professional-looking lines and gradients is Anti-aliasing. I always make sure it’s turned on, especially for line art and detailed areas, to prevent jagged edges. And, of course, controlling the Opacity of your layers and brushes is crucial for blending and adding depth. Playing around with opacity at different stages helps achieve that soft, painterly look or intense shadows. I often set my opacity to 100% when blocking in base colors, but then lower it significantly for blending and building up subtle textures. Now, for the fun part: brushes! I get so many questions about which brushes I use, and honestly, having a few reliable favorites makes all the difference. My top picks usually include the Airbrush (Triangle), the Genius Pen, the Oil (Hair) brush, and the Dotted Line (Round) brush. The Airbrush (Triangle) is fantastic for soft shading and creating smooth gradients. I use it for backgrounds, skin tones, and adding a gentle glow to certain areas. It's incredibly versatile, and by adjusting its size and opacity, you can achieve a wide range of effects, from subtle blurs to soft light sources. For crisp lines and detailed work, the Genius Pen is my absolute go-to. It gives you incredible control, perfect for clean line art or intricate details like hair strands or small patterns. I find it responds really well to pressure, allowing for varying line weights, which adds so much life to my illustrations. When I want to add texture and a more traditional art feel, the Oil (Hair) brush is amazing. Despite its name, I use it for more than just hair! It’s great for adding a painterly texture to clothing, foliage, or even rougher skin textures. It helps break away from that super-smooth digital look and adds a unique organic touch. Lastly, the Dotted Line (Round) brush might seem niche, but it's surprisingly useful for special effects, patterns, or adding a stylized touch to outlines. Think spark trails, decorative borders, or even subtle textural overlays. It’s one of those brushes that can really elevate a piece and give it a distinctive flair. My process often involves switching between these brushes and constantly managing my layers. I frequently use the "Undo: Brush Stroke" feature (more times than I'd like to admit!) and "Redo: Change Layer Visibility" to experiment and refine.
