How to Squat the Right Way

2024/2/23 Edited to

... Read moreHey fitness fam! So many of us want that 'perfect squat,' but it can feel like a mystery, right? For a long time, I struggled with getting my squat form just right, especially when the weights got heavier. I used to worry about getting hurt or just not feeling strong. But after countless hours of practice and learning, I've finally figured out some key principles that transformed my lifts and helped me achieve that 'perfect squat form' everyone talks about. One of the biggest game-changers for me was truly understanding how to keep my chest up. It’s more than just looking forward; it's about engaging your upper back and core. If you let yourself get 'folded' forward, not only does it put unnecessary strain on your lower back, but you also lose power! I learned that by actively thinking about driving my shoulder blades back and down, and keeping my gaze neutral (not looking too far up or down), my torso stays much more upright throughout the movement. This prevents that dreaded 'good morning' squat and helps you stay safe, even when you 'go heavy' and want to 'have good form.' Another critical correction was focusing on my knees. You constantly hear 'knees out,' but what does that really mean? For me, it clicked when I started thinking about actively keeping my knees going outward and ensuring they are always in line with my toes. When my knees used to cave in, I felt it in my hips and sometimes even my lower back. To fix this, I began using a resistance band just above my knees during warm-ups to cue that outward pressure. It taught me to activate my glutes more effectively. This ensures proper tracking and helps prevent knee pain. Remember, you never want 'them ever go in' past your toes – maintaining that alignment is crucial for joint health and power transmission. Beyond these foundational cues, here are a few more tips that helped me elevate my squat game and truly 'be elite': Bracing: Before every rep, take a deep breath into your belly, brace your core like you're about to get punched. This creates intra-abdominal pressure, which is like a natural weight belt, stabilizing your spine and allowing you to lift more safely. Control the Descent: Don't just drop into the squat. Control the eccentric (downward) phase, aiming for a smooth, consistent speed. This builds strength and helps you maintain tension. Achieve Depth: Aim to get your hip crease below your knees, provided you can do so while maintaining a neutral spine. Not everyone needs to hit rock bottom, but a good range of motion is important for full muscle activation. If you struggle with depth, mobility drills for your ankles and hips can make a huge difference. Practicing these cues consistently makes a massive difference. Don't get discouraged if it doesn't feel perfect overnight. It's a journey, and every rep is a chance to refine your 'perfect squat form.' Stay strong and keep lifting!
