Google launches new JPEG image file library as Jpegli

Google launched a new JPEG image file library called Jpegli. It stores images in smaller but same quality. It is available with 100% of the original JPEG library. The source code is available for download on GitHub today.

What is the Jpegli file?

Jpegli is a new JPEG library that can compress 35% of files with the same quality and still compatibility with the old JPEG encoding and decoding standards and 8-bit image encoding, with compression speeds equivalent to the libjpeg-turbo and MozJPEG libraries in use today.

Jpegli also adds the ability to encode 10 + Bit images and open them from the JPEG library from the original, which can only encode 8 bits, making the image files even higher in quality.

In a simpler way, Jpegli files have a higher quality, but smaller file size. They can still be viewed on applications or browsers that support JPEG files without installing any more codec. In the end, we can store more images on the same memory area, whether it's memory on the device or on a cloud like Google Drive or Google Photos. It also makes websites load photos faster.

The Jpegli to Opensource library is open to freely using source code. It can be downloaded at GitHub.
