💭 “You’re too sensitive.”

💭 “That never happened.”

💭 “Relax, it was just a joke.”

If you’ve ever heard lines like these and walked away questioning your own memory, emotions, or sanity — that’s not miscommunication. That’s gaslighting.

Gaslighting isn’t always loud or obvious. The covert kind is the most dangerous because it looks like:

👉 Minimizing your pain (“It wasn’t that bad”)

👉 Rewriting history (“I never said that”)

👉 Mocking you as “too emotional”

👉 Shifting blame (“If you weren’t so sensitive…”)

👉 Disguising control as “concern”

⚡ Over time, this erodes your trust in yourself, leaves you anxious and walking on eggshells, and even creates symptoms of CPTSD like brain fog, hypervigilance, and chronic shame.

✨ Here’s the truth:

You’re not crazy. You’re not too sensitive. You’re being manipulated.

And the moment you name it, you take the first step toward breaking free.

... Read moreGaslighting is a form of emotional abuse where one person manipulates another into doubting their own perceptions, memories, and feelings. This insidious behavior often occurs in subtle ways that can be difficult to recognize, making it especially damaging over time. The covert nature of gaslighting hides behind phrases like “You’re too sensitive,” “That never happened,” or “Relax, it was just a joke.” These statements serve to minimize your experience and undermine your confidence. The five common examples of subtle gaslighting include minimizing your pain, rewriting history, mocking emotions, shifting blame, and disguising control as concern. For instance, when someone says, “It wasn’t that bad,” they are invalidating your feelings. When they claim, “I never said that,” they are denying reality and causing confusion. Calling you “too emotional” mocks your valid reactions, while blaming you by saying, “If you weren’t so sensitive…” shifts responsibility. Lastly, presenting control as concern can disguise manipulation under the guise of care. The psychological impacts of gaslighting are profound. Victims often experience brain fog, hypervigilance, chronic shame, and symptoms consistent with complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD). These mental health effects result from the gradual erosion of trust in one’s own judgment and feelings, leading to heightened anxiety and a persistent feeling of walking on eggshells. Recognizing gaslighting is the critical first step to healing. Naming the behavior allows survivors to regain their sense of reality and self-trust. Building awareness of these subtle tactics equips individuals to set boundaries, seek support, and engage in therapeutic interventions if necessary. Professional help, including 1:1 coaching or counseling with specialists in emotional abuse and narcissistic behaviors, can be invaluable for recovery. If you or someone you know has experienced any of these subtle gaslighting behaviors, it’s crucial to understand that the manipulation is not your fault—and you are not “too sensitive” or “crazy.” Identifying and naming gaslighting enables you to reclaim your mental health and take meaningful steps toward breaking free from emotional abuse.
