Mei's Endothermic Blaster in DnD 5E

Hey fellow adventurers and DMs! I've always loved the idea of blending my favorite games, and lately, I've been obsessed with bringing the tactical fun of Overwatch into my Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition sessions. One item I absolutely had to homebrew was Mei's iconic Endothermic Blaster. It's such a unique weapon, and translating its freezing mechanics into DnD 5e has been a game-changer for my players, adding a whole new layer of crowd control and strategy. When I first thought about creating the Mei's Endothermic Blaster for DnD, I knew it had to feel powerful and versatile, just like in the game. I decided to classify it as a Ranged Weapon, specifically a Pistol, and an Artifact requiring attunement. This ensures it's a special item that characters really have to earn, fitting its technologically advanced nature. It’s not just a simple magic item; it's a piece of high-tech gear designed to rapidly cool objects and creatures, giving players versatile firing modes to choose from. One of the coolest features, in my opinion, is that it's Battery Powered. This means no more worrying about carrying around ammunition! Instead, it uses stored energy. While I haven't added a complex energy tracking system, I usually rule that it recharges passively over a long rest, or perhaps has a limited number of powerful uses per day for its special abilities, just to keep things balanced and interesting for the DM. This makes the Endothermic Blaster a reliable tool in extended dungeons or wilderness treks. Let’s talk about its primary firing modes. First up, we have the Endothermic Emitter. This is your go-to for applying the signature 'Freeze points' effect. When you hit a target with this mode, it deals 1d4 Cold damage. It's a precise shot, too, with a +3 bonus to Ranged Attacks and +3 to Damage, using a standard range. The key here is that it applies Freeze points. For every hit, I have the target accumulate one Freeze point. Once a creature reaches a certain threshold (I usually set it at 3-5 points depending on creature size/challenge rating), their movement speed is halved. If they accumulate even more (say, 6-8 points), they become incapacitated for 1 minute, effectively freezing them solid! There’s a Reload 20 property, representing the time it takes to vent and prepare the next blast of freezing mist, but it’s more flavor than a strict turn-by-turn reload mechanic in my games. Then there’s the Icicle Spear mode. This is for when you need a bit more punch. It deals 1d8 Cold damage and also benefits from the +3 Ranged Attacks and +3 Damage modifiers. While it still applies Freeze points, I usually have it apply fewer points per hit than the Emitter, or perhaps only on a critical hit, to differentiate the modes further. The Icicle Spear has a shorter Reload 6, suggesting it can fire these solid projectiles more quickly, but perhaps less frequently than the continuous spray of the Emitter. This gives players a choice: continuous crowd control or a burst of damage. And who could forget Mei's iconic Ice Wall? I've implemented this as a reaction ability. Once per short or long rest, or maybe tied to a certain number of charges, a player can use their reaction to create a temporary 10x10 foot ice wall. This can be incredibly tactical – blocking off chokepoints, creating cover, or even trapping enemies. It lasts for a few rounds (I typically say 1d4+1 rounds) and requires a Strength check to break through, making it a powerful defensive or control tool. I’ve seen this save my party more times than I can count! Incorporating the Mei's Endothermic Blaster into my DnD 5e games has been a blast. It offers a unique combat style, perfect for an Artificer, a sneaky Rogue who loves to control the battlefield, or even a Ranger looking for a non-magical, yet potent, ranged option. For DMs, it’s a fantastic way to introduce a bit of sci-fi flair or a powerful relic into an adventure.
