East Side Hidden Isakaya Bar?

Recently whilst browsing through my feed on Lemon8, I saw another creator post about Shifudo, a small Japanese shop tucked away in Kensington Square. I decided to head down after my workout session to try it out and see spill the tea if it’s yay or nay 🧐

💬 Name: Shifudo

📍 Location: Kensington Square

📍 Address: 2 Jon Lokam, #01 -50, S537846

💸 Damage to wallet: $30.70

💬 First thoughts:

It’s very easy to spot, located facing the upper paya lebar road, the store was dressed very isakaya like, loved the decor. They provide alfresco dining or indoor.

👄 On the Menu:

🐟 Salmon mentiako don ($15.90)

Review: Was quite disappointed with this… It didn’t look appealing when they served it to me, rice wasn’t that warm nor fluffy, felt cold and the egg was broken :c

Rating: 2.5/5 (Mentaiko sauce wasn’t too good too)

🐚 Hotate Mentai ($6.90)

Review: Out of the dishes I guess this was the best? Wished it wasn’t flooded with the mention sauce

Rating: 3.5

🍢 Shio Butabara

Review: Was surprised that a skewer like this cost $7.90, overall it tasted great! But I didn’t feel it was worth the price

Rating: 4/5

💭 Overall thoughts:

Perhaps I didn’t order the ‘right’ dishes but I felt the 3 dishes I ordered were pretty lack luster. Apart from the taste of the dishes, the time it took for the food to come was quite a wait too, i waited at least 5 -10 minutes in between each dish. Overall, the ambience and vibes of the store is nice but as for the food, I wouldn’t necessarily come back often, perhaps if I do, I’ll try other dishes on the menu! If you do drop by, do let me know your thoughts too!

... Read moreIf you're planning a visit to Shifudo or any cozy isakaya bar in Kensington Square, here are a few tips from my experience. Firstly, while some dishes like the hotate mentai skewer impressed me with taste, others such as the salmon mentiako don didn’t quite meet my expectations due to cold rice and presentation issues. It might be worthwhile to explore their other offerings or specials that might not be on the standard menu. Pricing is another factor—some skewers and dishes felt a bit on the pricey side relative to portion and quality, so it's a good idea to balance your order accordingly. Also, be prepared for some wait time between dishes; the service pace was somewhat slow during my visit but may vary. The ambiance truly reflects a classic isakaya vibe on the East Side and offers options for alfresco dining, making it a cozy spot to unwind after a workout or casual stroll in Kensington Square. If you’re curious about Japanese izakaya bar design or want to compare menus at other nearby Japanese eateries, checking out local reviews and trending dishes can help make your visit more rewarding. Do also share your own experience if you try Shifudo—I’d love to hear what dishes you recommend!
