I'm not usually a board or card games person. But ‘Abbey’, a question-based local card game, piqued my interest. Its goal to facilitate cosy, intentional conversations is something I'd get behind anytime.
And I had the chance to try it out with my friend group whom I've known for over 10 years. (Thank you team Abbey for sending over the deck!) To my surprise (or not), I found that there were still things to learn about each other.
Tldr; the questions in the card deck easily lead to hours of long conversations, and they’re mostly open-ended. If you like card games similar to ‘We’re not really strangers’, it’s likely that you’ll enjoy this too. I guess a word to describe it….would be ‘wholesome’?
With no winners or losers, players take turns to ask each others questions from their hand, which later build a path in front of them. Akin to Uno, there are 'action cards' which allow evasion of questions. We found ourselves not needing these, with the game lulling us all into deep, reflective connection. The open-ended questions made follow-up questions easy. The session easily lasted over 4 hours, and left us feeling heard, connected, and closer.
