i’m seeing stars rn. so worth it though 🫶 #murph #memorialday #crossfit #gym #fypシ
Wow, just catching my breath after tackling the infamous Murph workout! If you're wondering what had me 'seeing stars' and feeling utterly exhausted but incredibly proud, let me tell you about this insane workout. The Murph isn't just any CrossFit challenge; it's a Hero WOD created to honor Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, who died in Afghanistan in 2005. Doing it, especially around Memorial Day, is such a powerful way to remember and push your own limits. For those unfamiliar, the full Murph consists of a 1-mile run, followed by 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 air squats, and then another 1-mile run. And if you're really going for it, you do all of this in a 20lb vest! My notes from the OCR recap a bit of my strategy: 'SCALED Murph Notes: no weight vest, 20rdscindy, rx pull ups, push ups, squats.' This means I opted for no weight vest this time, which definitely helped with 'my breathing' during those intense moments. I also broke down the reps using the 'Cindy' protocol – doing 20 rounds of 5 pull-ups, 10 push-ups, and 15 air squats in between the runs. This strategy makes the sheer volume of reps much more manageable, trust me! Before you even start, the mental game is half the battle. I spent days visualizing each segment. For the runs, pacing is key. Don't go out too fast on that first 1-mile run, or you’ll pay for it later. For the bodyweight movements, breaking them down is crucial. Whether you do sets of 5, 10, 15 like in 'Cindy,' or come up with your own scheme, just keep moving. Those 100 pull-ups and 200 push-ups can feel endless if you don't have a plan. And remember those 300 air squats? Your legs will be screaming, but consistency beats speed here. What I love about the Murph is how it strips everything back to pure grit. There’s no fancy equipment, just you against the clock and your own determination. It's a true test of endurance, strength, and mental fortitude. Every time I do it, I learn something new about my own resilience. Even when you're 'seeing stars' and think you can't do another rep, finishing it gives you this incredible rush. It’s not just about the physical challenge; it’s about honoring the sacrifice and pushing yourself beyond what you thought was possible. If you're thinking of attempting the Murph, I highly recommend finding a good scaling option that suits your current fitness level. There's no shame in scaling; the goal is to complete the workout safely and honor its purpose. Whether it’s using assistance for pull-ups, doing knee push-ups, or simply breaking up the reps more, make it work for you. And always, always listen to your body. Recovery afterwards is just as important as the workout itself. Hydrate, refuel, and give your muscles the rest they deserve. This workout truly shows you what you're made of!
