Learning to cook in my 20’s✨ part2

2025/8/3 Edited to

... Read moreSo many of us find ourselves in our twenties, realizing that 'adulting' means more than just paying bills – it means feeding yourself! I know for me, the journey of cooking in my own kitchen as an adult has been a huge learning curve, and honestly, a really rewarding one. If you're like me, maybe you relied on takeout or quick fixes for too long, and now you're ready to embrace the joy (and sometimes, the chaos!) of homemade meals. It's completely normal to feel a bit overwhelmed when you're learning how to cook as an adult, but trust me, it’s a skill anyone can master with a little patience and practice. One of the biggest motivations for me to start truly learning to cook was understanding the benefits. Beyond just saving money (which is a huge plus!), cooking at home gives you control over what you eat, leading to healthier choices. There’s also an incredible sense of accomplishment when you create something delicious from scratch. It’s also a fantastic way to destress and get creative after a long day. For me, it's become a mindful activity, a way to connect with my food and nourish myself. So, where do you begin on this culinary adventure? My advice is always to start simple. Don't dive straight into a gourmet five-course meal. Instead, look for recipes that require minimal ingredients and simple steps. Think one-pan chicken and veggies, simple pasta dishes, or easy scrambled eggs. Meal kits can also be a fantastic stepping stone, as they provide all the ingredients pre-portioned and come with clear instructions. I also found it helpful to gradually acquire essential kitchen tools – a good knife, a cutting board, a few pots and pans, and some basic measuring cups and spoons are usually enough to get you going. You don't need a fancy gadget for everything! One of the biggest hurdles when learning how to cook as an adult can be the fear of messing up. Trust me, I've had my share of burnt dinners and inedible experiments! But every mistake is a lesson. Did you add too much salt? Now you know for next time. Did it stick to the pan? Maybe more oil or a lower heat. Don't let perfection be the enemy of good. Another challenge is often time management. I found that meal planning and prepping a few ingredients on a Sunday can save so much stress during the week. Even just chopping vegetables for a few days ahead makes a huge difference. Here are a few personal tips that have helped me along the way. First, find your go-to reliable recipe sources. Whether it’s a specific food blog, a cookbook, or a YouTube channel, stick with what works for you. Pinterest and Lemon8 are fantastic for visual inspiration! Second, embrace leftovers – they are your best friend for quick lunches or another easy dinner. Third, don't be afraid to experiment with flavors once you get comfortable with basic techniques. A little extra spice or a different herb can completely transform a dish. Finally, and this is a big one: celebrate your wins! Every successful meal, no matter how simple, is a step forward. Share your creations, even if it's just with your houseplant! Cooking in my own space has truly transformed my relationship with food, and I believe it can do the same for you. Keep exploring, keep tasting, and most importantly, keep enjoying the process of becoming a confident home cook.
