cleanliness is next to....ADHD ✨

Cleaning with ADHD isn't about laziness. It's about reducing friction.

The more decisions your brain has to make before you even begin, the harder it becomes to start. That's why small, science-backed changes can make such a big difference.

✨ Start with the easiest win.

☀️ Work one category at a time.

🧺 Focus on progress, not perfection.

⏰ Use short timers to build momentum.

💛 Create an environment that works with your brain instead of against it.

You don't need more willpower. You need systems that support the way your brain naturally works.

Which one of these strategies helps you the most, or which one are you going to try first?

... Read moreManaging cleaning with ADHD often feels overwhelming due to the countless decisions and distractions that arise before even starting the task. One simple tip I found invaluable is the 'one-touch' rule—handle an item only once by immediately deciding whether to put it away, toss it, or set it aside for later. This approach prevents the clutter pile-up from multiple handling, which can increase overwhelm. I also experimented with using focused, short timers—setting just 10 minutes to clean one category or area. This technique keeps my brain engaged without intimidating me with long, open-ended cleaning sessions. Coupling the timer with upbeat playlists or specific soundtracks helped maintain my mood and momentum during these sprints. Another game-changer was rearranging my cleaning supplies and tools to be visible and within arm's reach. Storing everything where I can quickly access them reduces friction and decision fatigue when I start a task. For instance, keeping a small cleaning caddy stocked and ready prevents me from procrastinating just to gather supplies. Importantly, I reassured myself to focus on progress over perfection. Sometimes finishing a small section or clearing the floor first gives a sense of accomplishment that motivates continued cleaning. Recognizing that not everything needs to be perfect, but functional and livable, helped reduce stress and avoidance related to tidying. These small, science-backed habits made a substantial difference in how my brain experiences cleaning tasks—turning them from daunting projects into manageable activities aligned with ADHD challenges. If you’re facing similar struggles, I encourage trying these methods and adapting them to your preferences to find your flow.
