As far back as I can remember. ✨

At what age did you first start noticing signs of ADHD? ☀️🧡

For some of us, the signs were obvious in childhood. For others, we look back as adults and suddenly realize that the “daydreaming,” forgetfulness, unfinished projects, constant movement, impulsivity, disorganization, or difficulty focusing weren’t character flaws at all.

ADHD can show up differently from person to person, and not everyone experiences the same symptoms. Some people primarily struggle with inattention, others with hyperactivity and impulsivity, and many experience a combination.

One important part of ADHD diagnosis is looking at whether symptoms were present before age 12, have persisted over time, occur in more than one setting, and significantly interfere with everyday functioning.

💬 Looking back, how old were you when you first remember experiencing ADHD symptoms? Were they recognized at the time, or did you only understand them later?

... Read moreFrom personal experience, realizing ADHD symptoms can be a profound journey that often starts with reevaluating childhood behaviors. Many of us recall subtle signs like frequent daydreaming, difficulty completing tasks, or persistent restlessness that were previously misunderstood as mere personality quirks rather than indicators of ADHD. One key observation is that symptoms such as inattention may appear as trouble sustaining focus during schoolwork or forgetting important details in everyday life. Hyperactivity shows up differently depending on age; while children may be physically restless, adults might feel internally driven or restless even when sitting still. It’s crucial to recognize that ADHD symptoms must be present before the age of 12 and impact multiple settings, as emphasized by DSM-5 criteria. For example, difficulties at both school and home or challenges maintaining social relationships suggest a consistent pattern rather than isolated incidents. Personally, awareness was the turning point—it transformed the narrative from self-criticism to understanding that the brain is wired differently. This perspective enables compassion and opens pathways for effective coping strategies, including breaking tasks into manageable steps or using tools to improve organization. Moreover, the common signs outlined in DSM-5, like impulsivity, forgetfulness, or trouble waiting turns, resonate strongly with many people's experiences. They reflect patterns that interfere with daily functioning but are manageable once identified. If you or someone you know wonders about ADHD symptoms, reflecting on early signs and seeking evaluation can lead to better support and empowerment. Remember, you're not alone on this path—awareness and compassion are vital first steps toward thriving with ADHD.

apparently as early as 5 ( so 1994) but at the time everyone was convinced that I didn't have ADHD. at 26 my doctor said they all lied .

Me it was in my 50s and then I had to think back into childhood but back when I was a child adhd was not a thing plus I grew up in the country so ran off a lot of energy but still the signs were there and what made me think about this was my son after he was diagnosed with adhd

It hurts for a lot of reasons but these were the main ones. You get the best of you after you lose yourself for a while. After you’ve allowed someone else to get the best of you that was supposed to keep you as precious as when you gave yourself to them , you won’t fall into that again ☝🏾 #sadgirlh
