art i never finished bc i was scared to “ruin it”
i have so many more but i’d have to dig them up to get a photo 😭 but omg this is my biggest downfall in art, i finish maybe 20% of the pieces i start and i hate it. i guess it’s perfectionism? fear of failure? or just not trusting myself with the next step so i put it down “momentarily” and before i know it, it’s been months and the piece is buried with a million other half-finished pieces. anyone else??
Many artists face the challenge of leaving artwork unfinished because they become scared of "ruining" the progress they've made. This fear often stems from perfectionism or a lack of confidence in taking the next step, which can cause frustration and prolonged delays in completing pieces. Comments like "45 minutes in didn't want to ruin the shading I had done so far" or "got stuck trying to figure out what colors to even go for" are typical experiences shared by many creators. It’s important to recognize that these feelings are very normal and a part of the artistic process. Instead of aiming for perfection on a first try, allowing yourself to make mistakes can open up new creative pathways. One practical approach is to set smaller goals within the larger project, such as focusing on completing one section or one detail element at a time, rather than the entire piece all at once. Another helpful method is to periodically step back and assess your work from a fresh perspective, sometimes after leaving it temporarily. This can reduce the pressure you feel and help you reconnect with the joy of creating. Managing limited materials, like having "limited paint but finally got the colors looking like I was picturing," also influences motivation. Experimenting with what you have or mixing colors in new ways may rejuvenate excitement. Connecting with other artists who struggle with incomplete works, using hashtags like #strugglingartist and #artistsoflemon8, offers encouragement and shared strategies. Remember, finishing even 20% of your pieces is progress, and each step forward builds your confidence. Ultimately, embracing imperfection and trusting your creative instincts can transform unfinished worries into completed accomplishments. Don’t let fear hold your art hostage—allow your journey to be as unique and evolving as your art itself.
