Hi everyone! As the days get shorter and there's that undeniable crispness in the air, my Spotify playlists get a serious autumn makeover. September is such a transitional month, bringing with it a mix of nostalgia for summer gone by and excitement for cozy fall days. I wanted to dive a bit deeper into what makes a song perfect for this time of year and share a few more thoughts on my own September picks. For me, fall music often has a certain mood – maybe a touch melancholic, definitely atmospheric, and often leaning towards acoustic or indie sounds that just feel... warm. It’s about songs that make you want to grab a warm drink, curl up with a book, or take a walk through fallen leaves. Perhaps even a stroll where your black sneakers and blue jeans crunch on fallen autumn leaves! Take Miley Cyrus's 'Used To Be Young' for example. It's such a reflective track, perfect for looking back as the seasons change. It really hits differently when you're watching the leaves turn, maybe even conjuring that image of a dark, silhouetted figure in contemplation. Then there's Lizzy McAlpine's 'To the Mountains'. Her voice is just pure comfort. Imagining listening to this while sitting on a blanket in a grassy park, maybe with that city skyline in the distance, feels like the ideal September afternoon. It's folk-pop that just melts into the autumn air. Or for something with a bit more edge but still very much fall, bôa's 'Duvet' often finds its way onto my playlists. It has a slightly ethereal, witchy vibe that perfectly complements those early October feelings when things get a bit spooky and mysterious. The close-up image of a person singing on the album art really sets that intense, personal tone. And for those moments when you just need to feel something deeply, Laufey's 'Let You Break My Heart Again' with the Philharmonia Orchestra is simply stunning. The presence of a woman playing a cello in the background just adds to that beautiful, wistful atmosphere that fall often brings. It's perfect for a rainy day spent indoors. I also can't get enough of boygenius's 'Cool About It'. There's a raw honesty in their music that always resonates. It's the kind of song you want to listen to while journaling or having a deep chat with a friend, maybe under a sky with that dark purple cloudy background I saw on Spotify, or with handwritten text adding to the personal touch. Even something a bit more classic like Orleans' 'Dance with Me' can fit. It has a timeless, feel-good vibe that's great for road trips to see fall foliage, just like the classic album cover featuring four men suggests a journey. It’s not just about the songs themselves, but how they make you feel and the memories you create with them. I love building a playlist on Spotify that evolves as the month goes on, adding new discoveries and rediscovering old favorites. Sometimes, just seeing the album art pop up, like that one with the couple holding hands (whether in a wedding dress or a kilt!), or the black and white image of a person walking, can instantly transport you to a certain mood. So, as we fully embrace September, I'd love to hear what tracks are making your personal 'best of September' list. Are there any hidden gems you think I should add to my rotation? Share your fall music recommendations in the comments below! Let's make this autumn soundtrack amazing together.
