S/O to the OG Blacks

Growing up as a Black millennial, I've witnessed a profound shift in how Black identity is celebrated and perceived. Back then, dark skin, natural hair, and Black culture often faced rejection or negative stereotypes—not just from outsiders but sometimes from within our own communities. This led to a complex relationship with our own identities and a hunger to reclaim pride on our own terms. Today, while it might seem like everyone wants to claim Blackness, there is an unsettling trend where pro-Blackness can sometimes feel performative rather than genuine. Many highlight Black culture online but surround themselves with light-skinned friends or partners, which can reflect lingering effects of mental colonization—internalized biases affecting preference and social ties. Authenticity matters deeply. Respecting the OG Blacks means honoring those who endured hardships and maintained cultural integrity despite societal pressures. They shaped the foundation upon which current generations stand. It’s important to recognize that embracing Black identity is more than aesthetic or social signaling—it's about understanding history, struggles, and a commitment to truth. In my personal experience, being true to my heritage means embracing all shades and narratives within Blackness, fighting colorism, and calling out inauthenticity when it appears. It’s also about supporting community efforts that promote genuine empowerment and cultural education. Only through this honest approach can we continue to uplift Black culture without diluting its meaning or significance.
