That Certain Kinda Yarn That Isn’t Really Yarn in

A while back I shared that I would be making a Perry the Platypus inspo messenger bag for my cousin.

Here’s y’all’s update:

The original bag sagged so crazy lol. So I had a breakdown cried about it and found another way to make the bag I could be proud of!

Stumbled across a video on YT and the girl used macrame cord. What she failed to mention was how DIFFICULT it is to crochet with!! Yall it’s taking me so long to make this bag cause the amount on breaks I have to take is INSANEEEEE 😭

But I like the turnout so far. I just have to crochet on the flap and then add straps!

💵 Price Macrame Cord: $8.99 for 3mm size and about 200m of cord

I REEEEEALLY HOPE I HAVE ENOUGH FOR THE FLAPPPPP 😭🥹

... Read moreCrocheting with macrame cord presents a unique set of challenges compared to traditional yarn. Macrame cord, often thicker and less pliable than typical yarn, requires more patience and frequent breaks due to its stiffness and texture. The 3mm size cord used for crafting the Perry the Platypus messenger bag costs around $8.99 for approximately 200 meters, which is a reasonable price for such a specialized material. When working with macrame cord, it’s important to maintain proper hand positioning and take breaks often to prevent fatigue and discomfort. The durability of the cord makes the finished bag sturdy but also means the project progresses slower than with regular yarn. Adding straps and crocheting the flap are crucial final steps to complete the bag, and estimating enough cord for these parts is essential to avoid running short. For those interested in crocheting bags or other projects with macrame cord, watching tutorials can offer valuable insights, but prepare for a learning curve as many videos don’t emphasize the difficulty. Joining crochet communities, such as those tagged #crochetblackgirl and #blackcrocheter, can provide support and inspiration. Furthermore, macrame bags combine functionality with stylish designs, making the effort worthwhile for crafters passionate about unique handmade accessories. Ultimately, choosing macrame cord for crochet projects adds texture and strength that yarn can't always offer, but patience and practice are key to successful results. This approach suits makers ready to embrace the challenge and produce eye-catching, durable creations.

Unpopular Opinion
Acrylic Yarn gets such a bad rep. Lot of the times, it’s the cheapest yarn available. We need to stop shaming people for using acrylic yarn. Some people say it’s only for fall or winter but it can also be used for summer. You just have to use the right stitch and design. #crochet #knit

Three types of plush yarn are rated with pros and cons. A hot pink yarn is rated 9/10 for softness but sheds. A brown yarn is rated 8/10, similar to the first. A light green yarn is rated 8/10, noted as good for beginners.
Three more plush yarns are rated. A light pink yarn is 7/10, soft but not as much as others, good for beginners. A multicolored yarn is 1/10, described as rough. A beige yarn is 6/10, similar to the pink but less soft.

Do Yarn Types Really Matter in Crochet?
Not all yarn is the same. (Which is why I love it so much!) Acrylic, cotton, wool blends and bamboo all behave differently when you crochet and how you care for your crochet afterwards. There’s no “best” yarn — just the right yarn for the project. 💬 Which yarn do you like working with most?
