โรคเอดส์แมว หรือที่เรียกว่า FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) และโรคลิวคีเมียแมว (FeLV) เป็นโรคติดต่อสำคัญที่สามารถส่งผลกระทบรุนแรงต่อสุขภาพของแมวเราได้ โดยมักติดต่อผ่านการกัดหรือการสัมผัสกับสารคัดหลั่งของแมวที่ติดเชื้อ ซึ่งโดยมากจะเกิดจากแมวจรจัดหรือลูกแมวที่มีภูมิคุ้มกันต่ำ ในประสบการณ์ส่วนตัวของผู้เขียน หลังจากที่รับแมวตัวใหม่เข้ามาในบ้าน จึงตัดสินใจพาแมวไปตรวจโรคนี้ เพราะอยากมั่นใจว่าสุขภาพน้องจะดีและปลอดภัยจากการติดเชื้อ สำหรับวิธีตรวจนั้นไม่ยุ่งยาก ใช้เพียงเลือดเพียงเล็กน้อยประมาณ 2 หยดเท่านั้น ผลตรวจมักมีเร็วใน 10-15 นาที โดยตรวจด้วยชุดตรวจที่แสดงผลคล้ายชุดตรวจโควิด คือมีเส้นสองขีดแสดงว่าเป็นบวก และต้องแยกน้องแมวที่ติดโรคออกจากแมวตัวอื่นทันทีเพื่อป้องกันการแพร่เชื้อ อาการของแมวที่เป็นโรคเอดส์หรือโรคลิวคีเมียนี้มักไม่ชัดเจนในระยะแรก แต่จะมีภูมิคุ้มกันต่ำ ทำให้ง่ายต่อการป่วยติดเชื้ออื่น ๆ หรือเจ็บป่วยเรื้อรัง หากพบว่ามีน้องแมวในบ้านที่มีพฤติกรรมคล้ายกัน ควรรีบพาไปตรวจและปรึกษาสัตวแพทย์ สำหรับวัคซีนเอดส์แมวและลิวคีเมียเป็นวัคซีนทางเลือกที่แนะนำให้ฉีดหากแมวเสี่ยงต่อการสัมผัสโรคนี้ โดยเฉพาะแมวที่ออกนอกบ้านหรืออยู่รวมกับแมวจรจัด สรุปคือ การตรวจโรคเอดส์และลิวคีเมียแมวเป็นขั้นตอนสำคัญที่ช่วยปกป้องสุขภาพน้องแมวให้แข็งแรง พร้อมทั้งลดความเสี่ยงต่อการแพร่เชื้อในกลุ่มแมวที่เราดูแล ถ้าใครกำลังเลี้ยงแมวใหม่หรือมีแมวที่ต้องออกนอกบ้าน การตรวจและฉีดวัคซีนถือเป็นสิ่งสำคัญที่ไม่ควรมองข้าม
