As she sees the love of her life fall to her feet, she lets out a scream of pure agony and anger. She drops to the ground like a bag of rocks and holds her love in her trembling arms. “Essie? Is that you?” Her love asks with the little strength he has left. “It’s me, Aidan,” she says, smiling at him sadly. “The stars are so pretty,” he said, and he starts to close his eyes. “Aidan! Don’t shut your eyes, please!” She screams, holding his face. “I love you forever, Essie,” Aidan says with his last breath. “Aidan! No! You can’t die! We were going to get that house by the river. We were gonna have kids, little Cleo and Louis! I can’t live that life if you aren’t there! You said you would love me forever!” She sobs into his cold dead body and feels something she’s never felt before. Nothing at all.

My skin clings to my bones with such a struggle I wish I could step out of this husk to breathe. My limbs, moving with such a deep and heavy weight, act like anchors against the tides. I wish to close my eyes, the doors faltering against the struggle to remain open… there’s more… so much more… Perhaps these lids of lead can afford a moments rest. I’ll lay this bag of bones, and close these eager eyes, letting my lips part to exhale a much needed sigh as the defeat seeps through my soul, through my heart, and through my body…. The floor feels nice… like I’ve finally fallen and could fall no further… I’ll stay here, it’s easier than treading forward, at least until I feel better… Will I ever feel better?
