When I first started, I often wondered, 'How do you actually talk to God? How do you feel His presence?' Many people search for 'prayer and relationship with God' because they yearn for that deeper connection, just like I did. It’s not just about asking for things; it's about fostering an intimate, loving bond.
One of the most foundational steps, as I've learned, is to pray consistently. This isn't about rigid rules, but about making time for God throughout your day. For me, it started with simple morning prayers, thanking Him for the day ahead, and then reflecting at night. But consistent prayer also means talking to Him spontaneously – when I’m happy, sad, confused, or just walking through my day. It's like nurturing any other relationship; you wouldn't only talk to your best friend once a week! Through this consistency, prayer becomes less of a task and more of a lifeline, a genuine conversation where you share your heart and listen for His whispered guidance.
Beyond just talking, truly growing closer to God involves understanding Him. This is where the importance of His Word comes in. I've found that when I read my Bible frequently, it's like reading love letters from Him. Starting with the Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—helped me understand who Jesus was and what His love truly means. Then, when I pray, my conversations are richer because I have a clearer picture of His character and promises. Prayer helps me internalize what I read, turning knowledge of Him into a personal knowing *Him*.
Community also plays a huge role. I make it a point to go to church as often as possible and surround myself with other believers. There's something incredibly powerful about shared worship and prayer. When we lift each other up in prayer, or simply share our struggles and victories with fellow Christians, it reinforces our faith. These relationships can help guide you and hold you accountable, reminding you that you’re not alone on this journey.
Ultimately, for any relationship to flourish, it needs to be a priority. As Matthew 19:6 reminds us, relationships will only work if God is present. I've learned to put Him at the center of ALL relationships and literally put Him at the center of EVERYTHING. This means inviting Him into my decisions, my plans, my joys, and my fears. When He is your TOP priority and you put Him FIRST, you start to see a profound change in your life. This isn't just about private devotion; it extends to how we live outwardly. Prayer empowers me to live for Him in public, not just in private, and to share His love with others, truly living out the call to be a disciple, as seen in Matthew 24:14. Even during worship, prayer transforms the experience. I try to engage during worship by focusing on the words, and praying each lyric as if God is standing right next to me, just as Psalm 95 encourages. This intentionality makes worship a deeply personal and powerful interaction with God.
If you’re seeking to grow your relationship with God, remember that He desires it even more than you do. He will provide you with perfect love and so much more. Just start where you are, pray God gives you that relationship, and I promise you will see a change.
