Things to Do in Ocho Rios, Jamaica: Blue Hole 🇯🇲

With all of the time I’ve spent in Ocho Rios, this was my first time ever visiting Cool Blue Hole Ocho Rios — why did I wait so long? If Blue Hole isn’t on your Jamaica itinerary, then add it right now.

Blue Hole refers to the collection of limestone caverns & cascades made by the White River. It’s most known for its jump at the base of a waterfall.

Information to plan your visit:

+ There’s a fee to enter, but included in the fee is a local guide who will lead you to different parts of the river. A life vest is also included for those who wish to use one.

+ Different vendors have different fees, but most only accept cash so make sure to bring some with you.

+ I recommend bringing water shoes and a waterproof phone case or camera.

I ended up being too scared to make the jump (though I’ve jumped from a height twice that). Maybe it was the wake of the waterfall throwing me off.

Would you visit Blue Hole and make the jump?

... Read moreSo, you're looking into visiting Jamaica's Blue Hole in Ocho Rios? Let me tell you, it's an absolute must-do! After my recent trip, I have even more insights to share beyond the basic info to help you make the most of your adventure. Many people come to Blue Hole specifically for the thrill of the waterfall jump and rope swing experiences, and I completely understand why! There are several points along the river where you can take the plunge, ranging from smaller, easier jumps to truly exhilarating heights. Don't worry if you're a bit nervous; the local guides are incredibly supportive and will show you exactly where to step, how to jump, and how to land safely. They truly make the experience accessible for all comfort levels. The rope swings are equally fun, allowing you to soar over the vibrant turquoise swimming holes before splashing into the cool, clear water. It’s an adrenaline rush combined with the refreshing beauty of nature! Beyond the thrills, the Blue Hole is a stunning series of natural pools and cascades. The water is unbelievably clear and that iconic turquoise color you see in pictures is even more striking in person. You can spend hours just swimming, exploring the smaller waterfalls, and relaxing in the natural rock formations that act like jacuzzis. It’s incredibly therapeutic and a perfect way to cool off from the Jamaican sun. Here are some extra tips based on my experience to ensure a smooth visit: Your Guide is Key: The entrance fee includes a dedicated local guide, and they are invaluable. They don't just point you in the right direction; they ensure your safety, help you navigate the slippery spots, encourage you on the jumps, and even act as your personal photographer! Don't hesitate to ask them questions or for assistance. Essential Gear: As mentioned, water shoes are absolutely non-negotiable. The rocks can be very slippery, and good grip will make your experience much safer and more enjoyable. A waterproof phone case or camera is also a must-have if you want to capture those jaw-dropping moments and the stunning scenery without risking your electronics. You'll definitely want photos of those turquoise pools! Cash is Convenient: While some tours might include it, having extra cash on hand for entrance fees, tips for your guide, and any local snacks or souvenirs is highly recommended. Many vendors operate on a cash-only basis. Getting There: Blue Hole is easily accessible from Ocho Rios, typically a 20-30 minute drive. You can arrange a taxi or join a tour group. Consider booking ahead, especially during peak season. Best Time to Visit: To beat the crowds and enjoy a more peaceful experience, try to arrive early in the morning right when they open, or later in the afternoon. This also often provides better lighting for photos. Even if you're like me and paused at the highest jump, the sheer beauty, the refreshing waters, and the overall vibe of Blue Hole make it an unforgettable part of any Jamaica itinerary. It’s more than just an attraction; it’s an immersive natural adventure. I'm already dreaming of my next visit and maybe, just maybe, I'll conquer that big jump next time!
