I started by watching videos on proper cuticle care, filing techniques, and understanding different nail shapes. Don't underestimate the power of watching pros at work, even if it's just on your phone! I also found a lot of helpful Facebook groups for beginner nail techs where people share tips, ask questions, and show off their work. It’s a great way to feel connected and get advice. Essential Tools for a Beginner Nail Tech (My Go-To’s!): One of the biggest questions I had was, "What do I actually need to buy?" It can get expensive quickly, so I focused on essentials first. Here’s what I recommend for any beginner nail tech, especially if you're interested in Gel-X like I am: UV/LED Lamp: This is non-negotiable for curing gel products. Invest in a good one; it makes all the difference. E-File (Electric Nail File): While you can start with manual files, an e-file is a game-changer for prep and product removal. Just be super careful and watch tons of tutorials before using it on yourself or others! Nail Files & Buffers: Various grits are important for shaping and refining. Cuticle Pusher & Nippers: Clean cuticles are the foundation of any good set. Gel-X Kit: If you're going the Gel-X route, a starter kit usually includes tips, adhesive, and a small curing light. It’s a great way to get everything you need in one go. Basic Gel Polishes: Start with a few versatile colors like nudes, reds, and a classic black and white. Practice Hand: Seriously, get one! It’s less pressure than working on real hands and lets you experiment with techniques. Practice, Practice, Practice: My Top Tips for Getting Better No amount of watching videos will replace actual hands-on practice. My biggest advice is to just start! Here's how I approach it: Focus on Prep: Seriously, nail prep is everything. If your prep isn't perfect, your nails won't last. Practice pushing back cuticles, gently removing dead skin, and dehydrating the nail plate until it becomes second nature. Master One Thing at a Time: Don't try to do a full ombre design on your first go. Start with perfect single-color application. Then move to a simple design, then maybe French tips, and so on.
