Book Review

Magic Strikes by Ilona Andrews (Urban Fantasy)

Really enjoy this series and seeing Kate grow and develop as a character along with all the other characters. Also love seeing the slow progression of Kate and Curran's romance throughout this series. I liked the Midnight Games in this and seeing how this group handles everything. I really enjoy how Ilona Andrews weaves different folklore, legends and myths into each book.

Audiobook wise: overall enjoying but I still don't how Curran sounds (sorry this will probably be recurring for me) and I don't know how I feel about the voice change for Derek (I understand it but I'll have to see in the next one)

-Underground Tournament

Read moreAs an avid fan of urban fantasy, Magic Strikes stands out to me not only for its thrilling plot but for the intricate balance between magic and technology that Ilona Andrews crafts so well. The way folklore, legends, and myths are seamlessly integrated into the storyline offers a fresh take that feels both timeless and modern. One aspect I particularly appreciate is the nuanced development of Kate Daniels herself. Watching her grow from a tough, sassy female protagonist into a more complex character navigating love, loyalty, and danger makes the series compelling. The slow-burning romance with Curran adds emotional depth without overshadowing the action elements. The depiction of the Midnight Games is a fascinating exploration of underground culture within this magical world. It highlights themes of found family, where characters forge bonds that go beyond blood, a motif that resonates deeply with readers who enjoy character-driven stories. When listening to the audiobook, I noticed the voice portrayal choices sparked mixed feelings, especially regarding Curran’s voice, which shows how important narration style is to the immersive experience. However, this also illustrates the challenge of translating such vivid characters from page to audio. Furthermore, the conflict between magic and technology creates an engaging backdrop for the story, making readers question how these forces coexist and clash in a world that blends dystopia with fantasy. The inclusion of powerful sassy female lead tropes and underground tournaments adds layers of excitement and unpredictability. Overall, this series is a well-crafted journey with complex characters, magical intrigue, and richly woven mythologies that keep me eagerly anticipating the next installment.
