Upcycle denim purse
I absolutely love giving old items a new lease on life, and my latest project was turning a pair of well-loved jeans into a fantastic upcycled denim purse! It's such a rewarding DIY project, and the best part is that you end up with a unique handmade bag that reflects your personal style. If you've been looking for creative ways to make denim bags from old jeans, you're in the right place. Let me share some tips and a basic guide to get you started on your own! First off, why upcycle jeans? For me, it's about sustainability and creating something truly one-of-a-kind. Every stitch in my upcycled denim purse tells a story, and knowing it's made out of personal jeans makes it even more special. You'll need a few basic supplies: a pair of old jeans (the thicker the denim, the sturdier your bag will be!), a sewing machine (though hand-sewing is possible for smaller projects), strong thread, scissors, pins, and optionally, a zipper, magnetic snap, or buttons for a closure. You might also want some fabric for a lining, which gives your bag a professional finish and extra durability. To begin, wash and dry your jeans. Then, decide on the size and shape of your bag. A simple tote or cross-body bag can often be made from one leg of the jeans. For a structured clutch or a larger bag, you might need to cut open the leg seams to get flat pieces of fabric. I usually start by cutting off the legs, leaving the upper part (waistband, pockets) for potential use as a flap or exterior pockets. For a basic purse shape, you can use a rectangle of denim. Fold it in half, right sides together, and sew up the side seams and across the bottom. Don't forget to reinforce the seams, especially if you plan to carry heavy items. Adding a box corner at the bottom by pinching the fabric and sewing across will give your bag a nice flat base. Once the main body is sewn, consider adding a lining. Cut two matching rectangles from your lining fabric, sew them together in the same way, and then insert the lining into your denim bag, wrong sides together. Fold the top edges under and stitch them together neatly. Next are the straps! You can create straps from the waistband of the jeans, or cut long strips from the remaining denim, fold them, and sew for a sturdy handle. Attach them securely to the top of your bag. For a cross-body style, make a longer, adjustable strap. Lastly, add your chosen closure – a zipper is great for security, but a simple magnetic snap or button loop works wonderfully for a more casual look. Don't be afraid to experiment with adding pockets from the original jeans, or even embroidering designs onto your new bag to truly make it your own. Happy crafting!
