How I exfoliate without ruining my skin barrier

Dear exfoliation skeptics 💜,

As a Black woman, I’m extremely careful with exfoliation. Too much = irritation, and irritation = dark marks. This is why I only exfoliate once a week, intentionally.

✨ What’s shown

• Watermelon Glow AHA Night Treatment

• Cloudberry Bright Moisturizer (used after)

I only exfoliate on Saturday nights so my skin has time to recover.

💜 Mini Must-Knows

1. Inflammation triggers hyperpigmentation

Gentle chemical exfoliation is safer than scrubs.

2. Once a week is enough

Glow comes from consistency, not frequency.

3. Recovery products matter more than actives

Moisturizers with antioxidants help prevent post-exfoliation marks.

I love this combo because my skin looks smoother without feeling sensitive or stripped.

Save this before over-exfoliating 🫧

Follow for realistic skincare schedules.

-Sincerely,

Tee 💜🫶🏽

... Read moreExfoliating can be tricky, especially for those of us who are prone to hyperpigmentation and skin sensitivity. From my experience, the key to exfoliating without damaging your skin barrier lies in moderation and choosing the right products. I’ve found that using a gentle chemical exfoliant like the Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow AHA Night Treatment provides a smooth, brightening effect without the harsh feeling of scrubs. It hydrates while exfoliating, which helps prevent that tight or stripped sensation some exfoliants cause. One important tip I follow is exfoliating only once a week—usually on Saturday nights. This allows my skin ample time to fully recover and reduces the risk of inflammation, which often triggers dark spots, especially for darker skin tones like mine. Many think exfoliating more frequently means better results, but consistency over frequency really makes the difference. Another crucial component is focusing on recovery after exfoliation. I always apply a moisturizer rich in antioxidants, such as the Cloudberry Bright Moisturizer from Glow Recipe, immediately after exfoliating. This step locks in hydration, soothes the skin, and helps minimize post-exfoliation irritation or marks. Over time, this routine has made my skin look smoother, healthier, and more radiant without any signs of sensitivity or redness. It’s a simple yet effective approach that has become a staple in my skincare regimen. If you’re cautious about exfoliation—especially if you have darker skin or sensitive skin—I highly recommend trying gentle chemical exfoliants combined with nourishing moisturizers and limiting exfoliation to once a week. Your skin barrier will thank you! Remember, the goal is a glowing complexion through gentle care, not over-exfoliation. This approach helps maintain that delicate balance and prevents the common pitfalls like irritation and hyperpigmentation that many face during exfoliation.
