... Read moreOkay, seriously though, that moment when your mom is really going off and your brain decides to conjure up the wildest, most random thoughts? It’s like my brain just shouts 'EXAGGERATED TIME!' and runs with it. I used to think I was the only one, but turns out, so many of us teens deal with these weird, uninvited guests in our heads, especially during stressful 'PARENTING' moments. It’s a real #mentalstruggle sometimes! For me, it often starts with a 'POV: My intrusive thoughts when my mom is yelling at me pt. 2' kind of vibe. One minute, I'm trying to listen, and the next, my mind is completely off-roading. Like, instead of focusing on what she's saying, I might suddenly think of something completely unrelated, like that old 'howbow dah?!' meme, or some other absurd pop culture reference. It’s like my brain is actively trying to make me laugh or just totally space out to cope. So, what even are intrusive thoughts, especially for us teens? They're basically uninvited thoughts, images, or urges that pop into your head. They can be really random, sometimes even disturbing or just plain silly. The key 'DIFFERENCE' is that they're *unwanted*. You don't choose to think them, and they often cause discomfort or anxiety. It’s like your brain goes rogue, almost like it’s saying 'DON'T' think of that, and then boom, that’s all you can think about! It’s a completely normal part of brain function, especially when you're under stress or going through big changes, which, let's be real, is basically all the time as a teenager. Why do teens seem to get them so much? Well, our brains are still developing, hormones are raging, and we're navigating so much social and academic pressure. Add a high-stress situation, like a 'mom is yelling at me' scenario, and it's like a perfect storm for these thoughts to sneak in. It's a natural, if sometimes annoying, way our brains try to process intense emotions or situations. They don't mean you're going crazy, or that you're a bad person for having them. They're just thoughts! So, how do I try to control my intrusive thoughts when they strike? Here are a few things that have helped me: Acknowledge, Don't Engage: When a weird thought pops up, I try to just label it as an 'intrusive thought' and let it pass. I don't try to analyze it or fight it. Just, 'Oh, there's that thought again,' and then try to shift my focus back to what's happening or what I want to think about. Distraction (When Appropriate): Sometimes, if I can, I’ll mentally (or physically if I can excuse myself) shift my focus. Listening to music, drawing, or even just focusing on my breathing for a few minutes can create a mental 'DIFFERENCE' and break the cycle. Talk About It: This one is huge! Talking to a friend who gets it, or a trusted adult, makes them feel so much less scary. Just knowing I’m not the only one with these 'clown behavior' thoughts is a huge relief. Embrace the Humor: Honestly, sometimes, the thoughts are so absurd that you just have to laugh. If my brain wants to bring up 'howbow dah?!' in a serious moment, maybe it’s just trying to lighten the mood in its own weird way. Leaning into the absurdity can actually take away some of their power. Self-Compassion: Remember, these thoughts don't define you. It's okay if your brain does weird things sometimes. We're all just trying to figure things out, and our minds are complex. Be kind to yourself. So next time your 'mom is yelling at me' scenario plays out, and your brain goes wild with some random thought, just remember you're not alone in that 'POV'. It's part of the #teenproblems journey, and we're all in this together, trying to control those intrusive thoughts and navigate the chaos of being a Gen Z!
