No, Sarawak Is NOT In Indonesia! 🫨

hi my fellow mesties (Malaysia-obsessed travelling besties)! im back with the second instalment to my 13-part Malaysia Travel Guide Series! ✨

so basically, after five days of exploring Sarawak in a fashion that i can only, in retrospect, describe as shoddy 🥲, it became clear to me that the only way to get a true taste of this state, is to give up the notion of exploring it as you would in West Malaysia - which is essentially the Malaysia we know: eating, shopping, sightseeing... i mean, this is a state that is literally 62% forest, with 40% of its current population still directly rooted in indigenous tribes; so sticking to our standard Malaysia travelling formula is not gonna work here.

i know everyone always heads straight to Kuching – and i know most of us also don’t have the privilege of having an entire month off to explore Sarawak in excruciating detail; therefore, my top tip to doing Sarawak justice, is to either pair it with one other place for a one-week itinerary – or, come back again to cover a second destination separately. srsly this state is a legacy in every way, shape and form; so don’t shortchange yourself by sticking only to Kuching (altho, i have nevertheless made my guide super friendly for those who are only going to Kuching). ✌🏼

enjoy Sarawak! i know i did.

... Read moreExploring Sarawak is truly a unique experience, vastly different from the typical West Malaysia trip. To make the most of your visit, consider venturing beyond Kuching to truly immerse yourself in the state's vibrant culture and natural beauty. One of the highlights is visiting the Iban longhouses where you can witness traditional lifestyles firsthand and even enjoy authentic tribal cuisine like Ayam Pansuh (chicken cooked in bamboo) and Midin, a wild fern vegetable dish. These experiences offer priceless insights into the indigenous heritage that still thrives in Sarawak. Nature lovers must not miss Bako National Park, famous for its diverse ecosystems and wildlife. Taking a boat to the park followed by trekking through forest trails offers an unforgettable encounter with Sarawak's wilderness. For food enthusiasts, Sarawak provides a variety of flavors not to miss. Besides Sarawak Laksa and Kek Lapis, trying the local street food at places like Warung Kak Bedah or Laila Cafe enriches the culinary journey with authentic tastes. Don’t forget to check out cozy cafes like Earthlings Coffee Workshop and BlendSmiths Fifty8 for excellent brews and great vibes. Accommodation-wise, staying at the Waterfront Hotel in Kuching places you right above Plaza Merdeka Shopping Centre, offering convenience and comfort. The hotel’s prime location means you can explore key attractions on foot while enjoying plush rooms and amenities. To get around affordably, utilize the free Kuching Metro electric bus service that connects major spots including Semenggoh Nature Reserve. Also, be mindful when purchasing souvenirs; avoid products made from endangered animals and instead support local handicrafts and Sarawak’s famed white pepper. Don’t overlook Sarawak’s museums—they often have free entry and provide enriching cultural and historical context, such as the fascinating Chinese History Museum which connects personal family roots to broader Sarawak heritage. Lastly, download the H2 Sarawak and Sarawak More to Discover apps. These handy tools offer up-to-date bus schedules and comprehensive guides, making exploration smoother and more enjoyable. Whether it’s a short trip or a longer stay, approaching Sarawak with an open mind beyond typical tourist spots will reward you with rich memories of Malaysia’s diverse east.
