Unlearn Negative Self-Talk in 3 Easy Steps

Out of all the thoughts that come across your mind in a day, how many of those thoughts are negative? Do you find yourself falling into a loop cycle of cringe and dismay when you once again think, "How could I be so stupid?" or "I'm such an idiot?" Double-tap this post if you relate because the truth is there isn't a way to erase negative self-talk, but there is a way to manage it and meet yourself with love and kindness. Swipe through to learn how to unlearn negative self-talk in 3 easy steps:

01. View Your Thoughts Like a Busy Road

The average person has around 60,000 thoughts per day. The great thing about this is that with so many thoughts going through our minds, you can view your thoughts as just thoughts. You don't have to attach a meaning to your thoughts if you don't want to. When you watch a busy road, you see the cars race through and pass by, not seeing them again. Try to view your thoughts in the same way. A thought can be like a car on a busy road -- they're just passing through. You can view them as a place for curiosity without making it into a fact.

02. Find the Flip Side

Sometimes it isn't easy to simply allow a thought to pass by. Some thoughts are tricky and can make their way into our regular self-speak. When you find yourself putting yourself down, make a genuine effort to put yourself up instead. For example, when you make a mistake and think, "I'm so stupid," pause at that and change it to, "No actually, I missed something and that's totally human. I'm still learning and that's okay." Honestly, it will feel awkward and silly at first, but if you heard someone you love speak to themselves that way, you wouldn't allow that negativity to slide. Give yourself the same compassion. You deserve it.

03. Challenge the Thinking

Who told you all of these negative things about yourself? Is it rooted in truth or facts? Most, if not all, negative self-speak comes from a lack of evidence and quick judgment. Challenge your negative self-speak when it comes up. Instead of rushing to a negative opinion when negative thoughts bubble up, enter the conversation with compassion and challenge the negativity in the face. Ask yourself, "Who told you that?" Allow that question to sit and remind yourself of all the wonderful facts about yourself and let the negativity fizzle out.

Unlearning negative self-talk is no simple task, but with these steps, you will be on the journey to start carrying yourself with more kindness and compassion. I'm so proud of you for taking starting this journey! Remember you are worthy of everything and deserve the world. Let me know what you think in the comments!

... Read moreThe existing article lays out a fantastic foundation with three practical steps for managing negative self-talk. But sometimes, even with these tools, those persistent, nagging thoughts can sneak back in. That's where digging a little deeper into why we think the way we do, and equipping ourselves with extra tools like affirmations, becomes incredibly powerful. Understanding the Psychology Behind Your Inner Critic It’s not just you; almost everyone experiences negative self-talk. From a psychological perspective, our brains are wired for survival. They often highlight potential threats or errors to keep us safe, which can manifest as an overly critical inner voice. This 'inner critic' isn't always malicious; sometimes, it's a misguided attempt to protect you from failure or embarrassment. It might stem from past experiences, societal pressures, or even learned behaviors from childhood. Recognizing that these thoughts are often automatic, deeply ingrained patterns – rather than absolute truths about who you are – is the first step towards disarming them. Just like watching cars pass on a busy desert road with power lines stretching endlessly (as suggested in the main article), you can observe these thought patterns without necessarily getting into every single car. Understanding this psychological root helps you approach your self-talk with more curiosity and less self-blame, fostering that self-compassion we all deserve. Harnessing the Power of Affirmations This is where affirmations come in as a practical, everyday tool to actively counter those negative scripts. Affirmations aren't about denying reality; they're about intentionally focusing on positive, empowering beliefs to reshape your subconscious mind. When you consistently repeat positive statements, you're essentially creating new neural pathways, shifting your brain's default settings from negativity to self-acceptance. Here are some affirmations you can start using today, integrating them with the article's three steps: For "View Your Thoughts Like a Busy Road": When a negative thought speeds by, instead of chasing it, try: "I am observing my thoughts without judgment. I am more than my thoughts." For "Find the Flip Side": When you catch yourself saying, "I'm so stupid," pause, and then actively replace it with: "I am capable and always learning. My mistakes are opportunities for growth." Or, if you're feeling inadequate: "I am worthy of love and kindness, just as I am." I often find myself repeating this while enjoying a quiet moment, perhaps at a pink outdoor table with my coffee cup, or sitting in my favorite patterned outdoor chair with a green drink, just letting these positive words sink in. For "Challenge the Thinking": When that critical voice pops up, asking "Who told you that?", follow it with an affirmation like: "I choose to believe in my strengths and potential. I am resilient and strong." Making Affirmations a Habit The key to effective affirmations is consistency and belief. Don't just say them; feel them. Try incorporating them into your daily routine. Perhaps when you're getting ready in the morning, or during a quiet moment of reflection with a glass mug of tea next to your houseplant. You could even write them down and place them where you'll see them often. It might feel awkward or silly at first, just like challenging your thinking, but with practice, you'll notice a significant shift in your internal dialogue. Remember, this journey to unlearn negative self-talk is about cultivating a loving relationship with yourself, piece by piece, thought by thought. Every small step toward kindness makes a huge difference.
