My Holy Grail Products for Scalp Psoriasis

🍓Life with an Autoimmune Disease

I've had scalp psoriasis for over a decade. During that time, I've tried a wide range of over-the-counter products, some have helped and some have not done much. In this post, I'll share my top 3 tried and true products that have done wonders in relieving my scalp psoriasis symptoms. As always, consult your physician before trying anything new regarding your specific case!

01. Derma E Psorzema Scalp Relief Shampoo

Derma E has a great range of products for various skin types. I think they do a great job in offering products targeted for those with sensitive skin. What I love most about this brand is they also focus on clean beauty, so the ingredients are simple and not littered with harmful chemicals. The best part about this shampoo is that it gives off a cooling sensation when applied. This is so relieving for itchy dry scalp and helped me remove plaque buildup after 1 wash. You can find this at Ulta for $13.

02. Derma E Tea Tree Oil Scalp Relief

Another Derma E product I love to use after washing my scalp is the Derma E Tea Tree Oil Scalp Relief. Tea tree oil is known to have so many properties that can help reduce inflammation and enhance healing. The Derma E Tea Tree Oil is a great option for providing scalp relief as it contains a blend of tea tree oil and aloe vera. What I love most about this product is that it gives off a soothing minty feel and works right away to replenish a dry scalp. You can find this at Ulta for $16.

03. DHS Sal Shampoo

My dermatologist recommended I try DHS Sal shampoo when I was first diagnosed with psoriasis. This shampoo is a powerhouse in nourishing the scalp and removing buildup. Although I've tried many different products, this is the one product I always keep in my bathroom cabinet because it has always worked well for me. However, it does have an unpleasant "medicine" smell if you're sensitive to that. You can find this on Amazon for $12.

... Read moreAlright, let's dive a little deeper into my absolute lifeline, the DHS Sal Shampoo! When my dermatologist first suggested it, I was a bit skeptical, having tried so many things for my scalp psoriasis. But seriously, this shampoo has earned its permanent spot in my bathroom cabinet for a reason. You know that feeling when your scalp is just aching from plaque buildup and intense itchiness? That's where DHS Sal truly shines for my scalp condition. It’s formulated with salicylic acid, which is a fantastic keratolytic agent. Basically, it’s a gentle exfoliant that helps to soften and loosen those stubborn scales and plaques, making them much easier to wash away. I find that after just one wash, my scalp feels significantly cleaner and less congested. The relief from the constant itching is almost immediate, which is a huge win when you’re dealing with chronic psoriasis. I've noticed a dramatic reduction in flakes and redness when I use it consistently. It truly feels like it's reset my scalp, allowing it to breathe and heal. Now, let's talk about the elephant in the room: the smell. Yes, it does have a distinct 'medicine' scent, and I won't lie, it's not exactly a luxurious spa aroma. But honestly, for the relief it provides and the significant improvement in my scalp health, I've learned to completely overlook it. My personal trick? I follow up with a really nice-smelling, moisturizing conditioner, focusing on my hair strands rather than the scalp. Or, if I'm feeling extra proactive, I'll use a light, pleasant-scented leave-in scalp treatment after I've rinsed the DHS Sal and gently towel-dried my hair. It really helps to mask any lingering scent, and honestly, the benefits for my overall scalp health far outweigh this minor inconvenience. Think of it as a small trade-off for a much more comfortable scalp! I typically use DHS Sal Shampoo about 2-3 times a week, depending on how active my psoriasis is. During flare-ups, I might use it more often, but always listening to my scalp to avoid over-drying. When I apply it, I make sure to really massage it into my scalp gently but thoroughly, focusing on areas with more buildup. I let it sit for about 3-5 minutes before rinsing thoroughly with lukewarm water. This gives the salicylic acid enough time to work its magic on the plaques and dry skin. It's not just about removing buildup; it's also about maintaining a healthy scalp environment, which is absolutely crucial for managing this condition long-term and preventing future flare-ups. Pairing this with something soothing like a tea tree oil treatment (like the one I mentioned in my main post) or a hydrating aloe vera gel can provide even more comfort and hydration. After shampooing, I often apply a light, non-comedogenic scalp moisturizer to keep dryness at bay. It’s all about creating a personalized routine that works for your scalp and brings you consistent relief. This shampoo isn’t just a product; it's become a cornerstone of my scalp care routine, helping me manage my psoriasis and feel much more comfortable and confident in my own skin. If you're out there searching for serious scalp relief and an effective solution for buildup, I truly believe this is worth discussing with your dermatologist!
