questions to ask before getting married

my husband and i got married a little over three years ago and we’ve both learned a lot about just how much of a commitment marriage is in that time.

it's fun, it's a constant sleep over with your best friend, and it’s one of the best decisions i’ve ever made, but it’s also a legally binding contract that says your trust the other person with your life, your finances, and your future. so it’s not something you should jump into lightly.

ideally, you should talk through your boundaries, your future goals/plans, your finances, what you want your family to look like, what you want your relationship to look like etc, etc, etc…. asking questions is a great way to get these conversations going early on in your relationship.

my husband and i covered a lot of these topics before getting married, but i wish we had been more intentional about asking these questions directly. it would have saved us a lot of back in forth early on.

save these questions and ask your current or future partner:

- how will boundaries be set with in-laws?

- when, if ever, is divorce an option?

- where do you see yourself in 10 years?

- - where do you want to live?

- relationship non-negotiables?

- what counts as cheating?

- what boundaries will we have with friends of the opposite sex (or same sex)?

be sure to read through the questions in part one of this post as well (7 Questions to Ask Before Getting Married)!

Explore the importance of discussing boundaries with family and friends, as well as your views on divorce. Reflect on where you see yourselves in ten years and the lifestyle you envision together. Financial planning is another key element; ask about each other's views on managing finances and saving for the future. Understanding each other’s values regarding non-negotiables in the relationship, along with the definition of cheating, can prevent misunderstandings. Cultivating an open dialogue through these questions fosters trust and ensures you both share similar goals. Remember, marriage is not just a romantic commitment, but a partnership that requires communication, respect, and shared visions for the future. Creating an environment where both partners feel safe to express their thoughts on these pivotal subjects is vital for a harmonious marriage.
