You should probably re-write your notes

Is it too early to be doing this? I had my first ever college class today and here are my thoughts on notes.

Firstly, every class I’ve ever taken, I ALWAYS re-wrote the notes of the first day. This was to develop a strategy that worked for me, then I would use it in class. Today I had a college chemistry class and tbh I was lost. Until I got back to my dorm and started writing them out again, and now I definitely understand more. So you should probably be re-writing your notes, unless your brain works otherwise.

2023/8/23 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, so I just shared how rewriting my initial messy chemistry notes completely changed my understanding of a subject that initially stumped me. But I know what some of you might be thinking: 'Rewriting notes? Isn't that just a huge waste of time? I barely have enough time to take them once!' Trust me, I've been there. Before I refined my method, I used to think the same thing. However, there's a huge difference between simply recopying notes and actively reprocessing them. The real magic isn't just in the act of writing itself, but in forcing your brain to re-engage with the material. When I transitioned from my initial chaotic scribbles (my messy, unorganized handwritten chemistry notes looked exactly like the 'before' picture!) to creating re-written, organized chemistry notes with clear bullet points and highlighted sections, it wasn't just about neatness. It was like translating a foreign language into something I could actually grasp. This process isn't just about making your notes look good; it significantly helps with memorization because you're actively forming stronger neural pathways as you interpret, rephrase, and connect information. My biggest tip for making this process efficient, especially for complex subjects like chemistry notes, is *don't just transcribe*. Instead, try to summarize concepts in your own words. Use bullet points or short phrases instead of complete sentences – as some of those search queries wisely suggest, it really saves time! Break down big concepts into smaller, digestible chunks. Ask yourself: 'What are the absolute core ideas here?' This focused effort is also how you start building an amazing study guide without even realizing it. For example, after a tough lecture, I'd review my messy notes and, instead of just rewriting everything word-for-word, I'd try to explain the concept aloud to an imaginary friend or even record a short voice memo. Then, I'd write down only the key points I'd want them to remember. This clever technique forces active recall and helps reinforce the information for better recall during a test. It’s a fantastic way to check your understanding before an exam, rather than just passively rereading and hoping it sticks. When you see those organized notes later, they become an incredibly powerful tool. You’re not just staring at a page of words; you’re looking at your own interpretation and processed understanding of the material. This isn't just about aesthetics; it's about making your study materials truly *functional*. So, if you're a student revising notes repeatedly, consider making that revision an active rewriting process. It's truly an effective study method that shifts you from simply knowing about the material to genuinely understanding and memorizing it for the long run. Give it a try – you might just surprise yourself with the results!

YES Detailed chicken scratch in class to write down everything you think is absolutely important, and nicely written notes after class to break down and process what you learned!! Definitely worked for me, probably because it actually made me pay attention enough to get detailed notes 😂
