High Steel Bridge

... Read moreOkay, so you've heard about the High Steel Bridge in Washington, and let me tell you, it lives up to the hype! I recently made the trip, and it was an absolute adventure from start to finish. The original post mentioned the dirt road, and trust me, they weren't kidding – it's definitely an off-the-beaten-path experience. Getting there is part of the fun, but also something to prepare for. I'd highly recommend taking a vehicle with decent clearance, especially if there's been recent rain. The gravel road winds through some truly stunning Olympic National Forest scenery, so even the drive itself is picturesque. Just take it slow, enjoy the journey, and keep an eye out for wildlife. You'll feel like you're truly escaping into nature, which is exactly what makes this spot so special. Once you arrive, the sheer scale of the High Steel Bridge is incredible. Standing 420 feet above the Skokomish River, it's one of the highest railway bridges in the US, now repurposed for pedestrian access (though do check local regulations before you go!). The views down into the canyon are absolutely breathtaking – it's a humbling experience to look out over the vastness. Yes, there's some graffiti, as the original post mentioned, but in a way, it adds to the raw, untamed vibe of the place. It's a testament to how many people have made this trek to witness its majesty. For photographers, this spot is a dream. The light filtering through the trees, the dramatic drop, and the unique bridge structure offer endless opportunities. I found that late morning or early afternoon gave the best lighting, but honestly, any time you can get there is worth it. Don't forget to look not just down, but also up and around at the dense forest canopy. A few tips from my visit: Wear sturdy shoes: The path around the bridge isn't paved. Pack water and snacks: There are no facilities nearby. Check the weather: Conditions can change quickly in the mountains. Leave no trace: Help keep this beautiful spot pristine for everyone. If you're looking for an unforgettable outdoor escape in Washington State, the High Steel Bridge should absolutely be on your list. It's more than just a bridge; it's a journey into the wild heart of the Pacific Northwest, offering unparalleled views and a sense of awe that stays with you long after you've left. Trust me, the uphill drive is 100% worth it for that view!
