For example, the Vidanta resort sparked controversy due to its location right on the Rio Ameca river, home to many crocodiles. Despite protests, the resort was built, increasing crocodile sightings in nearby beach zones. To minimize risk, consider avoiding resorts near the Rio Ameca and exploring beaches further south or north of Puerto Vallarta. Areas like Las Mismelas beaches to the south offer clear waters and a safer environment. To the north, smaller towns such as Bucerías, Punta de Mita, and Sayulita are excellent alternatives with fewer crocodile concerns and charming local culture. When booking accommodations, I recommend opting for Airbnb rentals or smaller, locally-run hotels within Puerto Vallarta proper rather than large resort pools that serve more as decoration and may not be safe. Locals are the best source of advice—pay close attention to any posted signage warning about crocodiles, especially near rivers and mangroves. Crocodile activity is higher during the night, so avoid swimming in unmonitored areas after dusk.
