Understand This: Not every estranged parent is narcissistic. But when a parent consistently refuses accountability, dismisses their child’s pain, violates boundaries, and then acts confused about the distance, the answer is often right in front of them.
Healing means understanding that being someone’s parent does not automatically entitle them to unlimited access to your life. Respect, safety, and accountability matter.

In my journey dealing with a narcissistic parent, I learned that the label 'parent' does not guarantee respect or emotional safety. One crucial lesson is that setting firm boundaries isn’t about punishment but self-preservation. It’s okay to distance yourself from someone who consistently dismisses your feelings and refuses to take accountability for their actions. Many times, estranged relationships stem from unresolved pain caused by emotional manipulation or gaslighting. When a parent responds to legitimate concerns with confusion or blame, it often signals a lack of empathy that’s hard to overcome without professional help or personal boundaries. I found that becoming energetically unavailable to toxic behaviors helped me regain my self-worth and peace. For example, declining to engage when my parent tried to guilt me was liberating. This doesn’t mean I stopped caring, but I prioritized respect and safety in the relationship. Healing also means forgiving yourself for wanting peace and understanding that cutting ties isn’t a failure but a necessary step for mental health. Community support, like online healing groups or therapy, can provide encouragement and validation during this process. Ultimately, becoming clear on what respect and accountability look like helped me decide when to walk away and when to engage. This clarity fosters healthier relationships and personal growth. If you’ve ever had to choose peace over someone's title, remember you’re not alone, and healing is possible.
