Unhealthy parenting

7/7 Edited to

... Read moreFrom my experience working with families and observing various parenting approaches, I’ve noticed how these unhealthy styles can deeply influence a child’s emotional and psychological development. For example, rejecting parenting, marked by critical and negative statements, tends to severely damage a child's self-esteem, making them feel unlikeable or unlovable. I’ve seen children grow up struggling to build confidence and maintain relationships due to such early experiences. Ignoring or being unresponsive creates an environment where children feel insecure and unimportant. This often results in difficulties forming secure attachments later in life. When parents are inconsistent or disengaged, children may develop anxiety and feel neglected, which can affect academic performance and social skills. Overprotective parenting, driven by fear of the child’s ability to cope, can lead kids to doubt their own judgment and capabilities. A personal story from my circle involved a child who struggled to make independent decisions well into their teenage years due to constant parental control, causing frustration and diminished self-trust. Overindulgence causes children to feel entitled, believing they can get whatever they want without limits. I recall witnessing how this parenting style sometimes results in behavioral issues and difficulty accepting boundaries both in school and peer groups. Lastly, extrinsic parenting where approval is conditional based on performance can alienate children from their authentic selves. Instead of developing intrinsic motivation, these children often feel pressured to constantly please and succeed to gain love and acceptance. Understanding these unhealthy patterns is vital. For parents aiming to improve their relationship with their children, reflecting on one’s own habits and seeking support from parenting resources or counselors can lead to healthier family dynamics. Embracing patience, consistent communication, and unconditional support fosters secure, confident, and emotionally resilient children.

Kids scared for no reason means bad parenting.
For me, the biggest sign a kid has terrible parents is when they look genuinely terrified to make even the smallest mistake. I’ve seen it a few times — a kid spills a little juice, or drops a crayon, and immediately freezes like they’re waiting to be yelled at. Their shoulders tense, their eyes

The image introduces 'Normal Toddler Behavior That Society Calls "Bad"', explaining that a toddler's brain is still building. It features a crying emoji and tags for ages 1-4, child development, and real talk.
This slide addresses tantrums, noting that while people call them 'dramatic,' they are actually due to an undeveloped prefrontal cortex, meaning toddlers cannot regulate big emotions. Tantrums peak between ages 1-3.
This image explains that a toddler saying "NO" to everything is not defiance, but their first act of identity, discovering they are a separate person. It emphasizes autonomy as healthy development.

Unhealthy things I am unlearning as a mom 🌸
Being a good mom is my top priority. 1. Punishing emotions. I will not get my daughter in trouble for yelling at me, crying, or anything else. If you were crying and somebody told you you have no reason to be, or that they’ll give you a reason to cry, how would you feel? Worse? 2. Shaming.
