Share ... not

7/18 Edited to

... Read moreFrom my experience as a parent and someone close to child psychology, it’s vital to understand what to share and what to withhold from children to ensure their healthy development. Kids look to their parents for safety, stability, and positive role models. When parents openly share too much about financial troubles or relationship problems, it can create anxiety and insecurity in children. For example, I once noticed that discussing my work stress or disagreements with my partner in front of my child led to noticeable changes in their sleep and behavior. They became more withdrawn, showing that even unfiltered emotional outbursts can overwhelm them. It taught me to find appropriate ways to process and communicate adult concerns without involving them. Another area I’ve found important is avoiding negative comments about family members or exposing children to adult secrets. Children’s loyalty and trust can be confused if they hear criticism about the other parent or family gossip. Respecting and protecting their emotional safety by filtering this information helps them feel loved and secure. It’s also essential to avoid sharing personal regrets or unresolved traumas, as children are not equipped to handle these complex issues and may wrongly internalize those problems. Instead, parents should seek support from trusted adults or professionals and demonstrate resilience and confidence to their kids. Overall, striking this balance creates a nurturing environment where children feel protected yet supported, fostering healthy emotional growth and strong family bonds. In sharing, we must always prioritize what’s appropriate for our children’s age and emotional capacity.
