I’m a hiring manager at a small company where I started 3 years ago. We pay $20+/hr (most make $25-30 with commissions), offer 401(k), health insurance, and 6 weeks of PTO. It’s seasonal outdoor/mechanical work, mostly for college kids and we treat employees right.
Yet every year, my applicants get less professional. Today’s interview took the cake: a guy in a hoodie and sweats said 5-10 minutes late to work “should be fine” without consequences. He added he’d call out last minute if his “mental health needs it.” As an employer? All I heard was “unreliable, you’ll screw your team.”
It’s a pattern Gen Z applicants think punctuality is optional, call out over minor aches, and lack basic workplace sense. One employee got 9 write-ups for tardiness in 4 months then yelled at me and the owner when we fired him. He begged for another chance like he could have shown up on time all along. We have rockstars with great work ethics. But 4/5 hires? I regret training them. Have you dealt with this level of unaccountability?

Providing professional development focused on workplace etiquette and time management can also help younger employees understand their responsibilities.
