NPD 101: The narcissistic mother

The scariest thing about the Narc mom is the lack of empathy for a child she carried for 9 months. They will turn their backs really quick on child if the child ever went against their false reality they live in. (This reality will be explained in another post later this week) The sociopath narcissist will act as tho the child is no longer around, “a boundary” is used to ensure no one speaks of said child bc if reminds narc mom of her wrong doings. The song that pops up in my mind is, “ We don’t talk about Bruno”. The sociopath will make sure of that. Unhealed childhood trauma can turn into something much worse later in life. #narcparents #narcabuse #narcrecovery #narcissisticmothers #narc

... Read moreRealizing your own mother exhibits traits of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is a profoundly painful and often confusing experience. As I’ve navigated my own healing, I’ve come to understand that the scariest thing about a narcissistic mom isn't just her lack of empathy; it's how easily she can turn her back on you if you ever challenge her carefully constructed false reality. It feels like she's constantly offended by boundaries, seeing your independence or emotional needs as a personal attack. I remember growing up with a feeling that my emotions were constantly invalidated. Any perceived threat to her inflated opinion or desire for admiration would lead to her projecting shame onto me. It wasn't about me; it was always about maintaining her facade of perfection. You might recognize this if your mother constantly competes with you, makes unfavorable comparisons, or prioritizes appearances over your genuine needs. These are all classic signs that she might be struggling with narcissistic traits. From my experience, a narcissistic mother is often the first person to break a child's heart, programming them to hate themselves by denying their truth. They might exploit others for their own gain, struggle with boundaries, or use aggressive tactics to control and manipulate, demanding obedience with implied threats for defiance. It's a constant battle where you're made to feel like you're choosing between losing your mother or losing yourself. One of the most powerful and tragic realizations, as shared by Stephi Wagner, MSW, is this very dilemma. For so long, I stayed, not because of the love she showed, but because I desperately hoped she'd love me someday, just as Stephi Wagner, Therapist, so poignantly put it. Accepting that your mother is simply not capable of being the mother you always needed her to be is both tragic and incredibly freeing. It’s a crucial step in healing from narcissistic abuse. Starting your path to recovery means acknowledging the reality of your experience. It means recognizing these traits and understanding that the abuse wasn't your fault. Setting firm boundaries, even if they're met with resistance or anger, is essential. Seeking support from therapists specializing in narcissistic family dynamics or joining support groups where others share similar experiences can provide immense validation and guidance. Remember, fighting to heal is honorable. Your journey towards self-love and reclaiming your truth is valid and necessary. And please, don't let anyone tell you 'you only get one mother' as a reason to endure ongoing abuse. Survivors know this deeply and don't need heartless reminders. Focus on building the supportive relationships and the 'family' you deserve, one that offers genuine empathy and unconditional love.
