Where Americans Can Travel Comfortably Without Spending a Fortune

You don’t have to spend thousands on luxury hotels and expensive tours to have an amazing international vacation. Some destinations can give U.S. travelers a great mix of comfortable accommodations, affordable food, easy transportation, beaches, history and culture for much less than many popular vacation spots.

Here are 6 destinations to consider for a 7–10 day trip, using the starting estimates from the guide:

🇲🇽 Cancún — starting from $900–$1,300

Great for beaches, resorts, Mexican food and history, with direct flights available from many U.S. cities.

🇵🇹 Lisbon — starting from $1,100–$1,700

A strong choice for travelers who want Europe without the price tag of some major Western European cities. Expect historic neighborhoods, public transportation and plenty of affordable local food options.

🇹🇭 Phuket — starting from $1,000–$1,500

Think tropical beaches, inexpensive local food, affordable accommodations and plenty of activities without needing a luxury-level budget.

🇻🇳 Da Nang — starting from $950–$1,400

One to consider for affordable hotels, inexpensive meals, beaches and easy access to places such as Hoi An and Hue.

🇬🇷 Athens — starting from $1,200–$1,900

History, Mediterranean food and ancient sites make Athens a great base. You can also compare ferry prices if you want to add an island to your itinerary.

🇨🇴 Cartagena — starting from $950–$1,500

Colorful historic streets, Caribbean beaches, local food and a wide range of hotel options make Cartagena worth comparing for a warm-weather vacation.

How to Stretch Your Travel Budget Further

Book flights a few months ahead and compare several U.S. departure airports when possible. Travel during shoulder season, choose hotels just outside the busiest tourist areas, eat where locals eat, use public transportation and look for free attractions before paying for tours.

For a rough daily spending target, a budget traveler could start around $40–$70 per day, while a more comfortable mid-range trip may start around $80–$140 per day, before major airfare and depending heavily on the destination.

Prices are planning estimates rather than guaranteed rates. Airfare, hotels and activities can change significantly based on your departure city, season and booking dates. Always verify current passport, visa and entry requirements before traveling.

Which one would you choose: Mexico, Portugal, Thailand, Vietnam, Greece or Colombia? Comment your pick below and SAVE this post for your next international trip!

... Read moreTraveling internationally without spending a fortune is truly achievable when you plan carefully, especially when targeting destinations like Cancun, Lisbon, Phuket, Da Nang, Athens, and Cartagena. From my personal experience, focusing on places that offer a mix of warm weather, walkable cities, and affordable transport can significantly enhance the comfort and enjoyment of your trip while keeping costs low. For example, in Cancun, opting for locally owned beachfront accommodations rather than large resort chains can save money and provide more authentic experiences—think beautiful beaches paired with local eateries serving fresh Mexican cuisine at a fraction of resort prices. Similarly, Lisbon impresses with its historic charm and efficient public transportation, which makes exploring cheaper than renting a car. The neighborhoods like Alfama and Bairro Alto are both walkable and full of affordable dining options. Southeast Asia gems like Phuket and Da Nang are fantastic for travelers who want incredible street food, affordable luxury hotels, and scenic beach views without the luxury price tag. When I traveled to Phuket, I found that small guesthouses near the beaches offered comfort and calm, paired with amazing local markets where meals cost just a few dollars. Da Nang’s proximity to cultural sites like Hoi An means you can mix a beach holiday with history and culture seamlessly. In Athens, the city’s rich history and delicious Mediterranean food can be enjoyed affordably by shopping at local markets and taking advantage of city passes for free or discounted access to museums and archaeological sites. If island hopping, comparing ferry and flight prices between islands can help avoid overspending. Cartagena stands out with its colorful colonial streets and Caribbean vibes. I found that staying just outside the old town provided quiet evenings and cheaper accommodation, with easy access to local transport to explore the vibrant city. To stretch your budget further, booking flights months in advance and traveling in the shoulder seasons can reduce airfare significantly. Avoid tourist-trap restaurants by eating where locals dine and consider using public transportation or walking instead of taxis. Also, traveling with a credit card that waives foreign transaction fees and purchasing local SIM cards or eSIMs for data can reduce extra expenses. Lastly, always confirm visa requirements and ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. Travel insurance is also a wise investment for peace of mind. Choosing any of these destinations for a 7-10 day trip can provide unforgettable memories without breaking the bank. Each offers a unique combination of comfort, culture, and affordability tailored to the budget-conscious American traveler.
