Many beginners share the challenge of knowing where to begin and how to make sense of such rich and complex scripture. One practical approach is to incorporate prayer before each reading session, inviting the Holy Spirit to clear your mind and open your heart to understand and absorb the teachings. This spiritual preparation can help transform reading from a routine task to an engaging, reflective experience. Beyond prayer, establishing a structured chapter reading plan tailored to your personal interests or spiritual goals can be incredibly helpful. For instance, beginning with well-known books like the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) can provide a foundational understanding of Jesus’ life and teachings. Alternatively, thematic reading plans focusing on topics like faith, love, or wisdom can keep the study focused and meaningful. Many also find value in Bible journaling, which combines reading with writing reflections, prayers, or artwork related to passages. This practice deepens engagement, helps retention, and fosters a personal connection with the Word. Using hashtags like #howtostartreadingthebible, #biblejournaling, #biblestudyforbeginners, #readingtheword, and #biblestudyplan can connect you to supportive online communities where you can share experiences and learn from others’ insights. Ultimately, the key to reading the Bible effectively lies in approaching it with patience, openness, and a humble heart ready to learn and grow. Starting each chapter with prayer and following a consistent plan turns the overwhelming task into a spiritually rewarding journey.

I started with the gospels, then Daniel. I wanted to understand HOW Jesus spoke to people through parables. Daniel showed a lot of cross references from those books. Anyway, then I started following the Our Daily Bread’s Bible in a year. It has been WONDERFUL. Because, like you said— the Bible can be overwhelming reading from cover to cover. My plan is great because I feel like what I read in the OT coincides with the NT a little so I can relate the two a little. Like, reading the NT a light goes off in my head “oh, that’s why” kind of moment. Anyway, I say all of this to say— I am SOOOOOO happy I have been reading the greatest book ever! I’ve learned so much and feel like I’ve gotten closer to my Lord through this reading journey.
