Musée Picasso (Paris)

The museum that exists because of an inheritance tax bill.

Housed in the 17th century Hôtel Salé in the Marais, the Musée Picasso opened in 1985, built from the collection the artist’s family gave the French state in lieu of inheritance tax after his death. It holds the largest Picasso collection in the world, over 5,000 works spanning his entire career.

Save this for your next trip to the Marais.

... Read moreVisiting the Musée Picasso is a truly immersive experience that unravels the many facets of Picasso’s genius beyond his famous Cubism phase. The museum is housed in the 17th-century Hôtel Salé, a stunning example of Parisian architecture that itself is worth admiring. What I found remarkable was how the museum arranges Picasso’s works chronologically, allowing visitors to witness his artistic evolution from his early academic paintings to experimental sculptures and ceramics. One of the key takeaways from my visit was appreciating Picasso’s versatility. Many people think of him only in terms of Cubism, but the collection reveals a much broader spectrum of styles and mediums he explored over his lifetime. This includes surrealism, vibrant ceramics, and expressive drawings, all showing a restless creativity continuously evolving. The museum is more than just a gallery; it tells a story about Picasso’s legacy and how the collection came to be part of France’s national heritage through his family’s inheritance tax arrangement. This backstory adds depth to the visit, making you realize how art and history intertwine. For anyone planning a trip to Paris, especially to the vibrant Marais district, I highly recommend setting aside a few hours at Musée Picasso. It’s a peaceful, enriching escape from the hustle of the city and a chance to connect intimately with one of the 20th century’s greatest artists. Don’t forget to download the ubi places app for more curated art and cultural spots around Paris, enhancing your trip further.
